Question of the Day, May 16, 2010

Following in the footsteps of Buffy and Angel, Firefly will be the next Whedon vision to transition into comic book form. Should TV shows end after their season is over, or do comic books help regenerate the series?

If it's a really good series.

I actually think that more comics should become TV shows like the Walking Dead.

No one can possibly predict if a new comic is a smash hit, no matter what it's based on. Given that there's a loyal fanbase for Buffy, Angel and Firefly, it comes to no surprise that their respective titles sell well enough to stay in print. Also, Whedon is a veteran in when it comes to writing comics.

If some random producer decides to turn any TV series into a comic book, you know said producer either doesn't know anything about comics, or he/she never read a comic in years. But, who am I to know? Comics and television are similar in some ways. You have to have a good premise, competent writers, likable characters, and enough material to last a whole "season," if you will. Which, in the comic-sense, a season is six to ten issues.

If there's significant reason, then I can see it happening, but I would rather see the comics be guided by vision and inspiration rather than another route to catch the almighty dollar.

To be honest, the question isn't really whether or not TV shows should become comic books, but whether the comic books would do the show justice. Way too often, creators pursue other entertainment media for the purpose of a quick cash in rather then as another means to provide solid content. As a result, a lot of such projects end up with poor results and often end up being non-canonical. So creating a comic book series based on a TV show is fine as long as the creators intend to make said comic book series good content in it's own right.

As for whether or not a TV show should end just with the show, it really depends on what the comic books are used for. Alternative media is a good way to tell interesting side stories as well as introduce the franchise to a completely different crowd. That said, if the TV show itself was already growing stale towards the end, it means it has overstayed it's welcome anyway and no additional content will prevent that.

Apologies for pointing this out, but you're very late to the party there. Firefly was made into comics long ago, not just recently. There was a whole series entitled After They Left, meant to bridge the gap between Firefly and Serenity, and to expand more on the Blue Sun storyline ('Two by two, hands of blue'...).

Anyhow, I voted for 'depends on the show'. Some are really good, like Heroes, the webcomics they do tie in extremely well with the series and work pretty damn effectively. Others, like Glee or Lost, for example, are good shows but wouldn't really translate well to comic form. That is, not unless they get Alan Moore or Frank Miller in. Then anything would be good as a comic :D.

If there are stories which can be told, and, stuff that can be elaborated on, then I am all for it

I don't watch TV much, and when I did I can't remember any that would have made the transition well.

I'm not totally against it, some things have been really good in shows and made a great transistion into comics (Harley Quinn, Renee Montoya, Mr. Freeze's tragic backstory).

However, when it's not Batman it's transitioning into, and is in fact just a cancelled TV show, I think ending it then and there would be just fine. Have a big final sendoff to it and be done.

I couldn't quite see Seinfeld as a comic book. A show about nothing that translates into a comic book about nothing? I think that idea has been done plenty of times before.

Comics are usually artistic in my eyes, but TV series are not, so ... I don't know. I depends lots of the makers. Are they trying to upgrade the TV series into nice comic book series or just trying to cash in? In general I would say no, they should not.

In general, Comics are a YES! They give illustrators like me jobs. :D Firefly in paticular gets a HELL yes. It's not the same, but it gives us a little more play in the 'verse we fell in love with.

There are already Firefly comics set between the series and the movie.
