The anonymous is indeed a threat, thanks for the story to show just how dangerous they are. I didn't really think much of them until I read your post, the idea of them trying to take down the Escapist is horrifying. It's one of the last bastions of reason online.

Loved the 40k reference.

this made tears of pride slide slowly and patriotically from my face. damn i love the escapists.
as powerful as Anonymous is, I think our moderators are just hulking beasts of power weilding an almighty banhammer. there are a few on this website too who dabble in the hacking arts i assume, and will likely retaliate if anything happens on our beloved escapist.
but lets not let it come to that, shall we?

Rules 1 and 2.

Also, anyone who thinks Anonymous is an actual group is sorely misunderstanding the concept.

I rather doubt that Anonymous is a danger to anybody but a few idiots who piss them off (and scientology, which deserves whatever Anonymous throws at them). Even if they all band together for some mass trolling, what can they possibly accomplish aside from wasting a mod's valuable time?

4chan has "raided" here before.
Anonymous has not.

It lasted about three hours, and then they got bored and left.
As long as people on this site aren't assholes about 4chan, they don't care. There's quite a few 4channers on this site.

I'm quite indifferent about them.

Hahaha that group sounds awesome! But for everyone who is saying ban-hammer, sorry but they could just make another account...then another...then another...(All it really takes is a email, and a lot of emails you can get free) So basicly if the crazy mass of people get motivated they can really hurt people? Large numbers of people effect things??? Oh my gosh its like a democracy!!!
These people sound really funny, where could i find them? I'm kind of afraid of 4chan because of everything I've heard about it
*edit* Reading the wiki makes this group sound like even more fun! Minus the swastikas and racism

Hell, what if some lucky hacker managed to hack banking website, and post the info?
That happens already only 4Chan doesn't do it much because it doesn't amuse them as much as Rick Rolling the worlds Scientologists.

I don't think that will help much in a DDOS attack.

Anonymous scares the crap out of me. In a good way. I wish I could harness their power, motivate them to whatever purpose I intended. In that way, I could reshape society, through the internetz, and solve all of the world's problems. Or something like that.

Hey.....pardon my innocence but what/who is this Anonymous. Is Anonymous a group of 4chan people. Can some one please explain.
The first rule of anonymous is...old meme is old.

If you have to ask, you really don't want to know.

I think there may be quite a few anons wandering around here. But why would they mess with Escapist? It's not full of retards, and there's very few teenage girls clamoring for attention, so this site's pretty safe. Personally I would love to see the b-tards take down a huge target like Google, it would be like the Vandals sacking Rome. I always root for the anarchic underdog.

Just wandering, has anybody ever made it down to the bottom of the Offended page on ED? I just can't do it. This isn't a dare, either. I just want to hear from someone who's already been there. I want to know what's at the bottom.

Honestly, I think all those losers should go die. And it reminds me of this for some reason:

When a person, by his reprehensible behavior, practically cries out to be destroyed, it is truly your moral obligation to indulge them their wish. The person who takes every opportunity to "pick on" others is often mistakenly called "sadistic". In reality, this person is a misdirected masochist who is working towards his own destruction. The reason a person viciously strikes out against you is because they are afraid of you or what you represent, or are resentful of your happiness. They are weak, insecure, and on extremely shaky ground when you throw your curse, and they make ideal human sacrifices.
Cookie for anyone who knows what book that's from...

I think they have raided here before, and failed every time.
Yeah they did, they made a bunch of threads ripe with profanity and they all got banned. Lasted about 2 hours until the flood of /b/tards stopped due to the terribly uninteresting task of making new accounts every time another one was banned.

Anonymous isn't some ominous group of internet hackers... A long time ago it was reasonably close knit and may have been able to done damage (probably at least 5 years ago...). And that's not to say they were all hackers, just had enough people that at least a few of them had some knowledge of hacking. Nowadays its mostly 14 year olds who know nowhere near enough about computers to do any sort of damage.

And besides that, 4chan is just a site that shows what an unmoderated anarchist society would be like, except for the couple of designated baddies (Child Porn and actual attempts at any sort of raid)

The first rule about 4Chan is not to talk about 4Chan.

And, if you can help it, especially don't talk about /b/.

Why? Because you keep the toxic waste in the barrel. You keep the barrel off public streets. It's just common sense.
