Just reading, back in 1998, Time held its first online poll for this award. 50% of the votes went to Wrestler Mick Foley. He was henceforth removed from the list and (then) President Bill Clinton got the honour instead. Democracy in action indeed.

One day the North Koreans will realise the world is laughing at them and blow us all up.
That's one country nobody seems to mess with because they're that unstable. A bit like a toddler holding a gun in a locked room with a few people. They'll either shoot themselves by mistake or somebody else.
That's propaganda.
The West loves to say to someone they don't like that they are crazy, insane or monsters, all ways to dehumanize them, they did it with Stalin, they did it with Sadam, Kadaffi and with N.Korean leaders.

And what annoys me it's that it works, a lot of people out there really think the guy is crazy, and his father was too, and that they could put everyone's lives in danger by owning Atomic bombs.
Perhaps the reason everyone thinks Kim Jong Il was crazy is because, well, he was crazy. He has his own top 10 list and everything.

1. He kidnapped Shin Sang-ok in order to have him make a North Korean version of Godzilla. (Move bob even made a couple episodes about them i think)
2. He was, for a time, the purchaser of the largest amount of Hennessey whiskey.
3. He claimed he invented golf, and scored 11 holes in one in one game
4. He composed 6 operas in over two years, and had them performed
5. His birth was apparently marked by a double rainbow, and a bright star in teh sky.
6. He has a song with lyrics that claim, "We cannot exist without you, Comrade Kim Jong Il!"
7. He claimed to have invented hamburgers
8. He had constructed a fake town near the South Korean Border in order to show the people of that obviously inferior country how wonderful life would be if only they defected.
9. He at one point hoped to solve North Korea's famine via breeding giant rabbits.
10. He does not defecate.

But don't believe that list is all that there is to the worlds greatest leader, look up some trivia for yourself!
Wasn't he also obsessed with Michael Jordan or something? I feel like I read somewhere that he had a big ass museum created to put an autographed basketball he got from Jordan inside it.

I'm talking about dehumanization from the West, not saying N.K is a good place to live. It certainly is place where the conditions aren't very good, but they are not crazy or monsters. If they were they wouldn't teach everyone how to read, build schools and colleges and provide free healthcare.
If you want to apply that sort of twisted logic, then Hitler was actually a hero because he made the most economically sound decision possible to secure Germany's financial stability: rounding up all the Jews and seizing their assets. In doing so, he managed to bring his country out of one of the greatest economic depressions in modern history and actually made it a superpower for a time. Sure, he had millions of innocent people killed and precipitated the worst war of all time, but the ends justify the means right?
I'm not going to lower myself to your level. That's like a huge straw-man, nothing I said even remotely suggest that.
Your point: North Korea are not monsters because they built schools and colleges, and offer free Health Care
My Point (slightly altered from JJE): The Nazi built schools and colleges, and offered free health care, but are still monsters

The qualms many have with North Korea do not stem from their public works projects, the North Korean government can still be labeled as monsters even if they have really good health care.

FUN FACT! They actually manipulated it to read (going downwards, first letters only): KJUGasChambers.

Which was meant to stand for: Kim Jong Un Gas Chambers.
yes, this was AWESOME.
Why was he even nominated though?

The most important person is the person that people feel have had the greatest impact on society. That is why people like Hitler and Stalin win these things. It's the person with the greatest impact on society.
suddenly, the last years man of the year beign oru prime minister makes a lot more sense. he was one of the worst economist in history.

I think people misunderstand when it comes to most important person and Time Magazine. It's an opinion based poll that is not a popularity contest. The most important person is the person that people feel have had the greatest impact on society. That is why people like Hitler and Stalin win these things. It's the person with the greatest impact on society. This person is not usually good, but they can be. Now on to the biggest question: Why did they do this? Just to do it? That seems stupid.
Actually Hitler was amazingly popular before World War II and even had a huge following in the US up, and even during the war, which is one of the reasons why such draconian measures were taken with US security and in terms of information control and propaganda.

Hitler is so quotable, because he was right about 99.9% of the things he said, it was that 00.1% that was bug nuts crazy that snuck up on people. He was able to get people that otherwise hated each other to pretty much fall into line behind him and his regime. Today people like to quote hitler, showing it to be similar to what someone else says, hoping it coutns as a "win", missing the point that Hitler was simply right about that many things.

Incidently the global love for Adolf is one of the reasons so many people who believe in such things agree he was the second Anti-Christ. An Anti-Christ is not some demonic figure that drops a sauron-like shadow accross the world, but someone who rallies the hearts and minds of the people in general and gets them to love him before he fully shows his stripes.

This is also why despite the rhetoric, the people who actually believe that stuff don't consider either Bush or Obama to be on that list. Both came into power on hairsbreadth elections and faced major, constant opposition, neither are thus Anti-Christ material.

Kim Jong Un wouldn't fit for either "Person Of The Year" or "Anti-Christ" (which I'm just mentioning for fun) because globally speaking he's pretty well hated. Some might fear him, but he had no real respect from anyone. He continues to exist because it's easier to occasionally pay him off than step on him, though to be honest that might be changing if his current plans go forth. Right now we have a weak, and ineffective joke of a president when it comes to international and military policy, which means he's been making big moves as far as rocket technology and nuclear power go because he knows Obama will never sent the military in to stop him, giving him 4 years to pretty much run rampant. That's why it's kind of funny.

Stalin is an interesting case, being both hated and venerated by the people he oppressed (even if some will deny this). The bottom line is that "The Steel Angel" saved Russia from communism. After the great uprisings you wound up with a basic situation where nobody wanted to go back to work and do what was nessicary to run society. Everyone interpeted communism as "contribte what you want to society and be provided for" so you wound up with all the people doing hard work putting down their tools and wanting to live easy lives and be provided for, that's what they were promised and what they fought for. To put it bluntly when Stalin took power Russia was falling apart and the people were starving. His Gulags were basically re-education camps that used extreme methods (including torture) to turn people into obeidient workers, loyal to the state. Stalin's basic idea was that socialism was nessicary, as communish wasn't workable, he didn't want to kill anyone specifically, but figured anyone who wasn't willing to work was pretty much useless, he didn't care if 99% of the people who went into the camps died, as long as the 1% that came out went on to become good little socialist drones. The horror of this is obvious, but it's important to understand something, Stalin's steely heart not only saved Russia, but turned it into a global super power, even the remnants of which can't be ignored today. He took a broken, starving, people with no direction and literally built an empire. It's not popular, even with Russians... but well... it is an example where you can see why he'd be "Person Of The Year" based on his accomplishments.

In comparison Kim Jong Un and his daddy might both be crazy, psychotic, megalomaniacs, but really they haven't done much but create a horrible oppressive police state, that largely only gets by through occasionally blackmailing the rest of the world. Stalin build an oppressive regime and was a world mega power, North Korea is pretty much a global joke. Like it or not Stalin did great things... terrible things, but great none the less... (to paraphrase Olivander from "Harry Potter" in regards to Voldemorte)

But it isn't just propaganda when you look at how the citizens of North Korea are treated, and how far behind they are in every aspect of living... The US isn't just going "bad man", there are horror stories constantly coming out of that country.
I'm talking about dehumanization from the West, not saying N.K is a good place to live. It certainly is place where the conditions aren't very good, but they are not crazy or monsters. If they were they wouldn't teach everyone how to read, build schools and colleges and provide free healthcare.
The US doesn't dehumanize North Koreans, it demonizes its dictators. Their leaders are sick, evil people and to think otherwise is blind. Their concentration camps exist to this day and hold not just dissidents but the children and infants of dissidents. I went to college with a refuge from North Korea who was born in one of these camps and was forced to turn his mother in for attempting to escape and then watched her be killed.

Sure Kim is a human just like all of us and just like Stalin and Hitler were. However, evil men exist and it isn't 'enlightened' to claim they are humans just like all of us, with 'issues' or 'striving for a greater good', its idiotic. Only those that are too enamored in their own counter-culture enlightened bullshit are incapable of making logical judgements against bad people.

I like how 4chan is described as a group of people rather than an imageboard.
