I dunno if this is the right formum but, it has to do with gaming so I thought it seemed right.

Does anyone here use a 5.1 (or 7.1 for that matter) HEADSET, for gaming?

I've never used one in any way, either long term or just a demo, always had propper 5.1 speakers but now a headset might be a good investment.
Are they actually any good? Do they really reproduce surround sound well?

i always assumed that 5.1 was called that because there were 5 speakers...

if that's the case then it would be VERY difficult to implement that into a headset.

I wish I had a nice 5.1 headset. It would sound incredible...

They just use really small speakers.

I don't know... maybe the centre 'one' is in fact two separate speakers placed at the front of each side?

I use a Plantronics one, it's great.

Directionally it's not as good as a true 5.1 setup, but it's better than normal stereo headphones. What's really good about it is the size of the sound if that makes sense. There have been moments with it when music kicks in where I have had to take the headphones of just to make sure I hadn't switched on the speakers as well, it genuinely doesn't sound like a normal set of headphones.

I'm not sure how 5.1 headphones would work, mine has six (left front/rear, right front/rear) and they work in combination to generate forward/backward noises plus two bass, my headphones have a lot of bass.

I tried a 5.1 headset once but honestly I played Shadow of chernobyl using it and almost shat myself.

I prefer the wearing a headset for gaming though but the quality is just as good as speakers. Gets slightly better atmosphere I suppose if they arent too heavy.

I use 5.1 for movie on my pc and gaming. They work quite well for both. FPS games are great you can shoot the gun and hear the casing drop behind you. Space games like x3 work great too as it gives great spacial awareness (ha!) The way they work is basically there are 3 speakers (front, side back) and they mix together to make great sound. My advice is to spend the money on a good pair. Play a game like stalker or crysis and it's a whole other game. (Stalker's soundtrack is amazing on headphones. the rain the low hums)

Headsets Schmeadsets. You want to get a full surround sound setup and crank that ***** up. You want every explosion to rattle the windows and set off car alarms.

I've always been curious about it too. Seems to me like proper speaker placement would be impossible, and a binaural implementation like Milesfast Positional Audo or Dolby Headphone would be better. I had good results with binaural gaming until the companies realized it was better for their bottom line to sell extra hardware and stopped doing it in software, but I've never tried a set of 5.1 headphones. Is there anyone who has experienced both?

Damn, you have both!?!?!

I received x41's from my sponsor. They are very nice, although i don't use the Base Booster often.

Ive been thinking of getting astros, how nice are they compared to the x41's?

And this, kids, is why we PC-gaming master race look down upon the unwashed masses of console players.

OT:
I've been contemplating getting a 5.1 headset. I dont really like using speakers, but I'd also like to get some surround sound.

You are correct. There are in fact 5 speakers in the headset. I am not sure if that is per ear or not. I think it is. The ".1" denotes how many subwoofers it has.

My brother owns a 7.1 headset. It is quite nice. It was better than some theater speakers I have heard. The sounds are crisp and clear and it is just so wonderful. However that doesn't justify the expense of them in my opinion. He paid $130 for them. I would recommend buying it if you are thinking about buying quality speakers (best not to wake the neighbors). However, if you just want a headset a $15 one is close enough. There isn't much difference but the difference is amazing.

I have the Turtle Beach EarForce HPA2 5.1 headphones for a PC. I have been using them since December and that work wonderfully.

I suggest you get the non usb set. here's a link on a review.

Considering how much I had to learn about 5.1 audio for a project I'm working on, lemme 'splain.

The "5" in "5.1" refers to the 5 speaker channels: Front left, center, front right, rear left & rear right, and the ".1" is the sub woofer, so crudus, you are correct sir!

7.1 audio is the same as 5.1, but you have two "side" speakers as well.

As far as 5.1 surround headphones go, nobody even comes close to Psyko Audio. [http://www.psykoaudio.com/]

Psyko headphones are on the more expensive side, but if you want a balls out, rip your head off, hear the bad guys coming a mile away & shit your pants in a horror game kind of surround experience, save your pennies and get THESE. You won't ever use your speakers again.

All other surround headphones use small speakers embedded & angled inside the earpiece to "simulate" surround sound, but it isn't true dolby 5.1 or 7.1, and the "sub" is usually just a "thumper" against the back of your head which doesn't really do anything but annoy you, and the way most of them are shaped they either hurt your ears after a while or you sweat like a rapist in front of a female judge & jury. (Descriptive, huh?) But those crazy engineers managed to come up with a headphone design that might feel a little heavy at first, but the earpieces are so comfortable after a while you forget that you have them on!

If you want the technical mumbo-jumbo then check out the link above, but if you understand how a Bose wave radio works, you're already halfway there.

I personally would prefer to just have an insane surround setup in my studio, but A: I'm limited in space and because this room isn't that big anyway, surround speakers would be a waste of time, and B: I have neighbors. The Psyko headphones were the best money I've ever spent, and the best part?

The were invented by a CANADIAN, just like pretty much everything else America takes credit for.

Ok enough with the infomercial, click the link & see for yourselves ;)

I use a <a href=http://www.amazon.com/TRITTON-Digital-Surround-Precision-Headset/dp/B002ZS6Y64/ref=pd_cp_e_0>Triton Ax 720 these days and it works quite well. It isn't as good as a legitimate surround sound system but thanks to multiple drivers in each ear it does a decent enough job replicating the experience. They were on the expensive side and they're also quite heavy. The input being optical audio is also a bit of a pain as well.

Yeah I seen some I am tempted by that are about £110 but I can't really justify it coz.. well ya know... it's headphones ffs. Plus seeing as I aint used multi-channel headsets before, £110 is an expensive satisfaction of curiousity.... Am looking a a couple, ones £50 and one's about 85 (thats a 7.1 thought)

Nah it's not just a headset I need, aint to bothered about the mic I'm an anti social fucker when I am gaming and don't talk much. More for games/movies later at night
