Huge Papercraft Green Hill Zone Celebrates Sonic's Birthday

This 68-inch-tall papercraft sculpture of Sonic the Hedgehog's iconic Green Hill Zone may be the best Sonic-related thing made in the last ten years. Yeah, I went there.

Earlier today, we posted about a rather magnificent was the 19th anniversary [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/102037-Super-Papercraft-Mario-Bros-Should-Avoid-Fire-Flowers] of the release of the original Sonic the Hedgehog, which means that the series' fans want to do something to celebrate the character they know and love.

In this case, "something" means constructing a giant papercraft diorama representing all of the major elements of the Green Hill Zone from the first Sonic the Hedgehog. Clocking in at about 68 inches tall (and some less-than-exact dimensions for the width and depth), this papercraft sculpture has all of the little details you remember: loop-de-loops, invincibility boxes, power rings, and those stupid little fishes that jumped out of the water to eat your face off.

It's a labor of love that supposedly took about a week to build, and yet one that still ends up feeling superior to every 3D Sonic experience created since the first Sonic Adventure.

Hate to tell you, Funk...

But SA1 wasn't even that good. In fact, it sucked just as hard as SA2.

One of those "launch goggles" thingys.

That said...I'm off to make a replica of one of the many Casino zones!

As douchey as this makes me sound, that's not all that impressive. It's boxes with some paper cutout standees on it.

Aww man I was hoping that he added Dr. Robotnik at the end! Still, very very well done!

I made one of these 4 years ago on the 15th anniversary, now they have a LOOP? I'm jealous D:

EDIT: Oh yeah, and if anyone's looking for some decent new-ish Sonic that's open source, free and heavily moddable, try www.srb2.org.
It kept me entertained for about 3 years, easily the longest time any game has, then I grew out of it.

Perhaps for you. I honestly enjoyed SA1, SA2, and Heroes. But then again, I'm used to being in the minority on these kinds of things.

Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 were awesome. I humbly request that you do not engage in any hatin'.

OT: This thing is awesome. Awesome awesome awesome. Except...for all the time it probably took to build it, I'm surprised that the guy didn't plan the actual video presentation of it whatsoever. The video was just so...awkward...

Still, like I said, he and his friends did an amazing job.

Same, Heroes was meh for me though. SA2 was pretty good as long as you skipped the cutscenes. (And all Shadow missions.)

And yet ;)
Still just boxes though.

I'd have been more impressed if he had at least used a blue ball for the checkpoint rather than a cube! it's not all that hard to make a cardboard cylinder for the bridge pieces either.

As a seriously amateur papercrafter in my youth, I'm mildly offended by the lack of effort shown.

Wow that video was just terrible. The construct is kinda cool and the floating rings moreso but ,jeez, watching that made ME feel awkward.

Shame it's the version from those god awful platform games though. I remember eagerly opening my Megadrive box and ramming in the sonic game only to find it annoyed the hell out of me I even enjoyed the built in Alex Kid game more.

The only good sonic games are the two adventures and that rather nice Bioware game I'm currently playing...
