Tiger Woods Sex Scandal Sinks Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11

Tiger Woods' chronic inability to keep it in his pants may be a bigger problem than EA expected as the new PGA Tour 11 [http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Dvideogames&field-keywords=Tiger+Woods+PGA+Tour+11&x=11&y=23&fsc=-1] has suffered a "particularly catastrophic" drop-off in sales.

A lot of high-profile (and high-paying) sponsors abandoned golfer Tiger Woods in the wake of his infamous sex scandal, but not no degradation of sales [http://www.easports.com]" and that "overall franchise sales for calendar year '09 were better than '08."

Calendar year '10, however, isn't looking nearly as rosy. The newest iteration of the game, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11, has suffered a precipitous 68 percent decline in year-over-year sales since being released in June, with the Wii version [http://www.amazon.com/Tiger-Woods-PGA-Tour-Nintendo-Wii/dp/B00386VMZA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1279563579&sr=1-1] down a "particularly catastrophic" 86 percent, according to Cowen & Co. analyst Doug Creutz.

Much of the loss is attributable to the fact that the 2010 edition of the game shipped with the Wii MotionPlus, but Creutz also pointed to Woods himself as a big part of the problem and, even worse, suggested that the damage may be beyond repair. "We are concerned that Woods' scandal woes may have permanently damaged the sales potential of what we believe to be EA's third most important sports franchise, behind FIFA [http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Dvideogames&field-keywords=Madden+NFL&x=0&y=0&ih=3_2_2_0_0_0_1_1_1_1.73_58&fsc=-1]," he wrote in an investors note.

Could this be the beginning of the end for Tiger Woods and EA Sports? Things are tough all over, as Creutz noted; Green Day: Rock Band [http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Dvideogames&field-keywords=Skate+3&x=0&y=0&ih=3_1_0_0_0_1_0_0_0_1.44_50&fsc=-1] doesn't seem to be living up to its hype either. But Tiger Woods is a known quantity, a "go-to guy" that EA Sports should be able to rely on to help keep the ship afloat. Sales will go up and sales will go down, but an 86 percent drop on a motion-controlled platform that's basically tailor-made for golfing games? There's just no way to put a good spin on that.

Could one of the reasons that the sales have dropped off be that we don't need yearly releases of a golf game? This "sport" doesn't even have the excuse of having updated rosters that mean anything.

It would be nice to think that the buying public finally wised up, wouldn't it? I just don't know that I'm that optimistic.

Put Phil Mickelson on the cover and just call it "PGA Tour Same As Last Year With Minor Changes". Problem solved.

Oh what, you know as well as I do that's EA's strategy and they still get away with it in a way that would make Street Fighter II era Capcom fly into a jealous berserker rage.

Surely they could have just added a "Hot Coffee" mod? Worked for Rockstar.

Although, it might be the fact that golf games have lost their shine?

Well, if they had included the features that South Park had led us to believe would be in the game, I'm sure more people would have bought it.

So the titles that are struglling are PGA 11, Skate 3 and ANOTHER rockband game? Maybe its simply the fact that people are tired of buying the same thing repeatedly and you need some new IP's, as risky as that is. If you realy want to play a golf game your not going to be put off my the fact that he cheated on his wife, I couldn't care less.

So, in summary, Tiger Woods new reputation caused his game to make less money. Well, I don't think anyone could have seen this one com-wait.....WHAT? My god. This just in, folks...In a truly shocking development, scientists have just discovered that water.....IS WET.

Sales are 86 percent down? What's that, like, 5 people?

They should try a "Tiger Woods Scandal '09" instead, that could improve their sales!

Or maybe because Tiger Woods is now really really shit at golf. And was even before the scandal.

Regardless, someone at EA should reeeeally have seen this coming.

Meh, golf games weren't that good anyways, and they have basically rehashing the same game over and over.

But we need those updated games that change absolutely nothing! If I can't have the latest edition I might go into a panic educed coma.

Well didn't Madden also take a hit over the last year? I think the "scandal" (which is none of our business in the first place) has less to do with this and more to do with people just being frugal. It gets harder and harder to justify buying the same game year after year and pass on the more unique games coming out.
