Anime Review: Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, Part One

Hmm. You seem to be reviewing only the first thirteen episodes and judging them against the first anime. I can see why you'd think the second comes up short, but to someone who's seen both series, the characterization embellishments in the first would seem bizarre if shoehorned in to the second's plot. I don't know if you've seen the whole thing, but Brotherhood has more than enough character development to go around; judging by location in the plot rather than number of episodes doesn't really make sense.
Well I have to say that I watched both shows and I loved both, and well yeah the first few episodes had a fast pace in the 2nd series, but that was because they had to tell so much of the first series again and didn't want it to get boring. But generally I like some of the characters from the 2nd show better and well I generally thought that the 2nd series was a lot darker and I liked that... and yeah it was closer to the manga and I like the ending of it better.
I was trying to nail what was wrong with episodes of Brotherhood. You guys came with the word "pacing".
I still feel like the story is being rushed with Brotherhood.

You should just go DL the rest of the series from a fansub site, it's well over and done with in japan(think it clocked in at 63 episodes) and I thought it was really awesome even better than the first series to be honest. I did miss my english voice actors from the dubbed series I followed on [AS] so I was glad to see the dubbed version hit [AS] in a very timely manner.
I think your issue with the shading being somewhat flat might come from the re-encoding or something like that. (I don't know; I've got a friend who says they mess with the colors when they come to the states) I found that the animation for brotherhood was much more fluid than the first series.
I was actually quite glad for the quick run through of story we had gotten with the first series. I also don't think we lost any character development because the way the story played out people like Hughs became ancillary characters that drove the motivations of other characters like Mustang throughout the rest of the series. Since you've only seen the first few episodes it's very hard to talk any further without major spoilage. (like Bruce Willis was already dead level spoilage)
I feel I can say this without giving anything away. We're introduced to many new interesting characters that are very rich in their own right and characters we were already acquainted with receive some much needed attention they did not get in the original FMA series.
Bortherhood was every bit as epic, if not more so, as its predecessor and I eagerly await to add all of its dvd's to my shelf alongside the first series. (I'll just do a box set this time though)

I was loving Brotherhood... right up until episode 25, when it just stopped. May I ask why? I'm waiting for Adult Swim to air the next episode, instead we're back at episode 1. WHAT'S THE HOLDUP??? Am I going to have to wait another six months for episode 26??

Judging Brotherhood by the first 13 episodes is a bit of a mistake... I wonder if they rushed through them a bit to get to the where the series really separate.

Could have Hughes death affected the first reviewer less because he already dealt with him dying in the first FMA series?

I actually started watching it on the funimation website, but then their videos section exploded and didn't work properly for many weeks. So I did the next best thing and got rather hooked on the HQ releases the fansub group Eclipse was doing, also by that time funimation had fallen behind in its releases. Still it's not stopping me from buying the dvds or watching them on [AS].llafnwod said:

Well, I started watching them on Adult Swim because even though I have broadband my computer sucks. But I think I stopped watching it on the website after like episode 40. I don't know if I have the patience to wait till the series gets to the point where I was watching so maybe I may deal with my crappy computer and watch it on Funimation. I mostly recommended the Funimation site because it is a legal and free way to watch later episodes, I didn't say the site didn't have drawbacks. =)KeyMaster45 said:
I have watched the entirety of both the original and brotherhood. I found Brotherhood to be far superior once it hit episode 30 where it truly started to separate itself from the original. The ending is also far more satisfying.
I'll have to throw my hat in with those saying you shouldn't judge it by the first 13 episodes. I felt that Brotherhood was, on the whole, a better series. The initial pacing might be off, compared to the first series, if only because Brotherhood was replaying the same beginning sans embellishments.
Both series are great, of course, but I slightly favor Brotherhood.
