Online Age of Empires Brings Other Humans Into the Fray

A new Age of Empires casts the series into a persistent online world where players forge alliances and cities grow even when their owners are away.

After the dissolution of Age of Empires developer Ensemble last year, fans were understandably worried about the future of the civilization-building strategy franchise. After Microsoft's conference at the European Gamescom convention, they no longer need to fret. The publisher announced today that it has teamed up with Robot Entertainment, a new studio opened by former Ensemble executives, to expand the series into massively-multiplayer territory with Age of Empires Online.

Like in previous Age of Empires games, players will create cities, manage resources, keep your people happy, and wage war. The key difference is that these actions will take place in the context of a persistent world. Your empire will continue to thrive (or decay) while you are away from your keyboard, and those other civilizations all belong to real people.

That "real people" part is important, as the core gameplay is centered around social experiences. No city can remain isolated forever, and as you play, co-op quests and competitive matches will become available. Both will yield substantial rewards for your single-player city-building, with PvP matches granting experience and co-op dumping loot.

Microsoft and Robot are still working out the exact pricing structure, but have hinted that the game will feature "free-to-play experiences," as well as paid "add-on content."

Age of Empires Online will be released exclusively on the Games For Windows Live store next year. Players interested in beta testing can sign up on the official website [http://www.ageofempiresonline.com/beta/].

Looks awesome :D

I signed up for the beta testing but you need to be 18 so I won't get in ):

I would love to try this out though. But I won't pay any subscription fees other than gold...

i hate how alot of modern RTS games looks so cartoony... i understand that they would want simplified graphics because its online, but alot of other games follow the same trend.

It's like they're destroying everything precious to me...

WHAT THE FUCK. Is with that artstyle. WHAT THE FUCK. What, are you trying to make it accessable and 'friendly' or some shit? Goddamnit. Stop desecrating the already ridiculed corpse of Ensemble Studios.

Surely sprites are easier to make, run, and wouldn't make you feel like you're playing spore?

Huh..the concept makes it kind of seem like a better implemented Evony....in the fact that it is a MMO-RTS where your cities continue on even after you have logged out...for better or worse... :/

It looks passable in all regards except for Games for Windows Live. There is no good that can come from using that service. It's a hassle to use and completely obtrusive. Also, the cartoony art style is fantastic. Glad they didn't go for a <url=http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/DarkerAndEdgier?from=Main.GrimDark>GrimDark look instead.

I already hate the graphics with an almost fury. It's just too cartoon-like.

You think MS would have got the hint by now.

It's not that bad, but yeah, it does look like Settlers Online more than AoE online. Still, I guess it's for technical reasons, maybe it's easier to render and won't slow down people's machines so much?

This looks like some goofy, cartoony, wannabe Travian attempt at attracting Farm Ville retards. I am a big AoE fan, but this isn't fooling me in the slightest.

guessing it will just be like all the other mmorts/city builders out there except battles aren't (as) automated. Gonna try to get in on the beta for nostalgia's sake, though.

As every previous AoE title had online as well and GFWL really isn't much of an improvement I fail to see why they would name this one specificially AoE online.
It's just so retarded -.-

ohmygodohmygodohmygodohmygodohmygodohmygodohmygodohmygodohmygodohmygod!!!!!!!!!

I like the cartoony look. It makes me think I'll be able to run this. It reminds me of the graphics for Age of Mythology.

I doubt the former Ensemble Studios people like this at all. Age of Empires was serious, this is not. This is a joke.

I'm fairly sad now. The concept seems okay with a persistent world, but the way they look like they're implementing it seems unappealing. And Games for Windows Live? I despise it!

You speak the truth friend, I think I can hear all of AoE disks crying inside their cases.
