Question of the Day, August 24, 2010

College professor Michael Abbott has successfully introduced Portal into the curriculum at Wabash College. The course is designed to acquaint students with "fundamental questions of humanity." Portal will be studied alongside Erving Goffman's "Presentation of Self in Everyday Life," a book that compares one's self to a theatrical production, where the truth is hidden offstage. What other games should be included in school curriculum? What courses would they be taught in and what could we learn from them?

Hahaha. i voted for Mario. The reason should be obvious.

Mario is like a healthy root to start from, hoping that from there something else than the copy paste stuff will comke up.

Rome/Medieval II/Empire Total War for history lessons.

I can honestly say I've learnt more about European history from these games than in any lesson.

Bioshock should be taught as part of the curriculum, politics. I reckon it would get a lot of people a lot more interested in it. For serious liek.
This. It really takes up alot of that.

Any game with multiplayer component could easily be a basis for a study on development of sociopathic behaviours.

Braid would be a good place to start. GTA is also brilliant but it is too slow paced and the average student (much less the female ones) isn't going to spend the time necessary to really understand it.

On a side note, why would Fallout and/or Mario be taught in a school curriculum?

Portal was also a great start. I'd also recommend Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.

Nothing beats tangential history lessons like some good old Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem.

Also as an aside, a friend of mine once used Goldeneye as part of a history project. True story.

But this is a course remember. And
the course is designed to acquaint students with "fundamental questions of humanity."
So I'm going to add another vote to Bioshock. I doubt I have to go into any detail as to why. I'm actually really surprised it isn't in the poll.

The original Dungeon Keeper, for examining of the human brain when exposed to concentrated dark humour, and how childhood nostalgia can effect your perceptions of things.

Other that, Bioshock, since it tackles a lot of issues with the human condition that can cause the collapse of a society.
