Square Enix Drops Plans for Final Fantasy XIII DLC

The best laid plans of Moogles and Malboro's often go awry, which it seems is exactly what happened to plans for Final Fantasy XIII DLC.

Speaking to Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu, Final Fantasy XIII director Motomu Toriyama said apologized to fans who were expecting downloadable content for the game, saying that plans to expand the game had not come to fruition. "We were planning to make some DLC," he said, "But that plan wound up not happening."

Toriyama had commented before Final Fantasy XIII's launch in Japan that players should "hold on to their saves" after they'd finished the game. Many took this to mean that DLC was coming, a belief bolstered when art director Isamu Kamikokuryou said that a lot of completed content had been cut [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/97532-Mounds-of-Content-Cut-from-Final-Fantasy-XIII ] from the game. At the time, however, Toriyama said [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/98349-No-DLC-Planned-for-Final-Fantasy-XIII ] that Kamikokuryou's had been taken out of context, and said that Square Enix wasn't planning any DLC at that time.

It's possible that Square Enix didn't want to reveal the content before it was ready, and it's also possible that when Toriyama made that statement in February, the DLC had already been ruled out. Either way, his most recent statement is pretty unequivocal, and Final Fantasy XIII DLC is sadly no longer on the cards.

I didn't find 13 to be all that enjoyable, I really want them to hurry up on Versus 13 though. I haven't heard anything new about it in a year or so.

I kinda saw this coming...There wasn't anything about DLC on the little notices on the back of the box.

You know, where it lists the online features of the games.

DLC for a final fantasy game, aren't they already halfway done with 15 and 1/3 the way done with 16?

Aw... oh well, I hadn't really expected it, but more would have been nice, even more of the same.

What with my being in the camp that actually really enjoyed Final Fantasy XIII and all that.

To be honest I doubt it would have been good anyways. Then again maybe it would get better a few hours in ;)

There is no 15 or 16th Final Fantasy.

The games in development for FF are:

Final Fantasy Versus XIII
Final Fantasy Agito XIII
Final Fantasy XIV

It's a shame that there's no DLC. Although i can't really imagine what they could even put into the game though.

Tha's a joke son, wen' right ova ya head. It seems like Square always has 2-3 FFs in development, but I see they're going with mostly 13s, and thier MMO this time around.

And good riddance. I'm sick of DLC.
Quoted for absolute truth.

I'm glad there's no DLC for this game. I wish games like Mass Effect 2 would follow suit, they're already on their third or fourth overpriced 2 hour installment.

DLC for FFXIII wouldn't have been great anyway. Just more pointless hunting missions or even more lengthy run down a corridor, fight, corridor, fight, corridor, boss sequences. Yawn. I hope the series drops the direction XIII went in and makes it more like FFVIII or FFIX.

In all fairness didn't the director want to make XIII-2 at one point? That's probably why he said to 'hold onto saves' so items and weapons could follow over.

Requoted for even more truth.

The only DLC that I find appropriate is multiplayer packs for new maps or something like that. That's fine with me. Multiplayer can get repetitive and boring on the same maps over and over again so a few new ones is just what you need to keep yourself interested in the game.

But saying that DLC adds to the story of a game makes me sick to my stomach. Even moreso when it's true. And yes, BioWare are a great example of how not to do it.

I'm hoping the world style goes like FF12, most areas are accessable from the start... if you power level or run like hell, it's always fun to find a city that should be accssed late in the game really early. The linearness of 13 is what really got to me.

Well, I guess I can cease my constant vigil for any news announcing the "All the Side-Quests and Stuff That Fans Kinda Expect to Get At the End of the Game, But We Took Out of FFXIII Just to Be Pricks" expansion...

Fiddlesticks. Mind you, I haven't yet finished FFXIII yet, so I'll still get plenty of enjoyment outta the game yet.
