Surely 100% of kids have had a bad offline experience, therefore online is 40% safer, lock your kids in the house , parents, real life is out to get them!

I tripped over a dodgy paving stone last week, that couldn't have happened online, therefore the internet is a good thing for health and safety.

Newsflash, paedophiles do a lot more harm offline than on, too.
In short, well done statistics.

The other 40% are obviously people who answered: Umm... who the fuck hasn't?

By the way, I'm hosting a party in Second Life later on for the 40% of people who feel they're missing out... it'll be a night to remember.

P.S. Did they remember to ask the guy in jail in Korea for killing his friend who eBayed his Ragnarok sword? Or maybe that's a whole separate survey.

Had some bad Online Experience too. When I was young and looking for porn on the internet and all I got was pay sites. That and I didn't know how to clear my internet history. So when my parents got back, my father said something like: "Oh, someone has been using the computer."
But then again, he should thank me for the time I've saved him looking for it himself :p

I am surprised it's only 60%. The internet is a horrible place :p People feel free to be comeplete arse hats to random people because they can.

I don't think as a parent you can have the power to "protect" your child from your horrors, or even should have the right to.

The world is not a nice place. The child will have to learn this eventually. The internet is a reletively 'safer' place to experiance, the negative side of humanity. What you should do as a parent is inspire in the child if anything bothers them, i.e. cyber bullying, discovering something distrubing on the internet, they can come to you for council.

It's just real life skills the child needs to develope. Personal sensorship (ignoring stuff) and dealing with dicks.

I've had some really horrible experiances and I still observe them to this day. It is such as shame there's such a dark side to humanity. World of Warcraft is quite awful. Any sense of loyalty has died in that game. It's all about personal gain and it doesn't matter whoes feet you trample over to get to the top.

Frankly I'm surprised it's not more. All you need to do is express some form of opinion on YouTube to get 300% of your Guideline Daily Amount of flaming, trolling and retardation.

Growing up using the internet, I've learned how to screen out that unpleasant nonsense.
If I have children, rest assured I will put that silly networking degree to use.

...Not that it will stop the nonsense that goes on any live chat of any major title.

Exposed to inappropriate content? Hands up who was looking for and at "Inappropriate content" in their teenage years. \\(^_^)
But... the disclaimers say you have to be 18 or older! You broke the law of the internet!
you filthy, filthy bast- okay, I did it too. Don't tell anyone!

I guess these 60% are only the ones who were ashamed to confess they looked at it intentionally. Or religious zealots. Or strange, strange persons.
That warning was what told me I had found the good stuff ;).

My major problem as a kid was getting linked to places with smut or someone trying to tear themselves in half butt region first (you probably know what I'm talking about).

As a kid who was "brought up" on the internet (spent alot of time on it) I've learned alot about it and it's culture, I used to be a total emo fag, however I opened my eyes and listened too quite a lot of people on this here internet, and now I'm (according to my IRL friends) a pretty cool guy.

Oh dear god, goatse.
Heh. Just be thankful that's the worst you've come across. These days I don't even flinch at goatse, since there is far worse out there.

Although, trying to explain to the parents how said inappropriate content got on the computer in the first place is no fun.
Don't tell me you downloaded and saved said content? Stream man, stream! No need to store it when you can just load, watch, leave!

Oh and erase your history. But yeah.

OT: To be honest I'm surprised it's just 60%. I would've thought at least closer on 80 or 90.... welcome to the internet.

That line right there almost brought a tear to my eye. It's good to see that someone has their eyes open for once. That someone didn't just go out and blame it solely on the internet, or video games, or TV. They included the parents. Praise the mighty mozzarella sticks!

The internet can be a pretty weird place for an adult, so imagine what it's like if you're a kid.
So? Online is not the only place kids can get a bad experience. Life is not all milk and honey you know. Online is the least of their problems. At least they are physically safe online.
Life's not all hookers and sunshine, my friend. Some is acid and blow...

No and shame on you for not recording it and putting it on youtube.

Kids need to have a thick skin is all. And there needs to be some sort of a "Welcome to the Internet!" sort of public service announcement that warns about banner ads, posting swimsuit pictures on myspace (come to think of it www.thatsnotcool.com does that), and how to not get suckered into looking at goatsee or other 4-chan shenanigans.

If anyone takes any stock in this information it will be a sad, sad day. Yes 100% of kids have bad experiences in life, stubbing a toe is the equivalent of getting tricked onto meatspin "whoops well that sucks" *closes window*
