Question of the Day, October 15, 2010

Apple is patenting new technology [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/104350-Apple-Patents-New-Anti-Sexting-Technology], which will prevent minors from "sexting" or receiving compromising texts on their iPhones. Do you think a similar technology should be invented to prevent people from texting while driving, during the movies or while at the drive-thru?

Absolutely. At this point, I don't care about people crying about their "rights" because texting while driving is illegal, stupid, and dangerous and people still do it. If they can't control themselves, someone has to. I'm not so sure about the movies, though, because there's a difference in protecting people from danger and protecting people from rude movie-goers.

Also, how would you plan to stop people from doing this? If they could find a way, I would love it.

I'm guessing some sort of GPS system that locks out your keypad in specific areas?

OT: That would actually be really handy and help prevent road accidents caused by using the phone while driving.

Hey they could even take it further, and implement anti-speaking technology, and then anti-widgets technology along with anti-internet technology. Eventually they could reach a point of selling bricks as phones, iBrick would be awesome new gadget...

Either way, how would they tell if you're texting while driving or sitting in the passenger seat? Would they go through your camera to see what seat you're in?

Where's the option for "How the hell would one impliment it without looking like big brother?"

I agree that texting while driving is stupid, but I can see how they would be able to mak it so the phone knows you're driving (and if it measures how fast you are going to do it, how will it distinguish between passenger and driver?).

No one should use the phone whilst driving unless they have pulled over in a safe location.

Have someone from Apple sitting in the car with you. It's no more obtrusive then Apple's current control over their products.

And obviously we can trust a multi-national corporation to control the population.

I'm sorry...what?

Hold on...why is the front page question completely different to the poll question?

The whole "while driving" thing isn't an issue where I live since it's against the law already, but you had me sold with keeping it locked at the movies. Honestly, I'm glad you've learned to stop talking on the damn things at the movies, but in a dark theatre, those little screens pull the focus of every eye behind/beside you.

Stop it, just stop it damnit. If you need to text/talk/tweet, then you shouldn't be at the movie. It's a chance to get away from life, not a sidebar, that's what DVD's/Blu-rays are for.

This is wrong and stupid on so many levels.

It is NOT a good way to just nurture the people instead of teaching them the correct thing.

But hey what ever, if people are stupid enough to buy it, less power to them, as they want.

It's illegal to drive while drunk, but you don't see a breath analyzer in every car, that would be stupid.

A breath analyzer in the phone that prevents you from texting while drunk, however. That would be a great idea. :)

I don't text; I've never been in a situation where I have my phone but can't use it to verbally communicate with someone.

what next? an App that will censor any picture that look "sexy"?

edit- they totally should do it, just so we can see it fail the very next day.
