Microsoft Rep Insists Gamers Will Graduate to Xbox 360

Almost two years after Xbox 360 [http://www.nintendo.com].

In an interview with Gamasutra [http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=19266], Greenberg, the director of product management for Xbox 360 and Xbox Live, said the Xbox 360 could succeed in attracting Nintendo's base of casual gamers as well as the hardcore gaming crowd typically viewed as Microsoft's audience. He added, however, that he didn't consider the Wii a "direct competitor," saying, "We actually very much complement the Wii experience. It's obviously clear that we're going head-to-head with the PS3 in this generation. I think what Xbox will be able to do as well as the Wii is grow the market."

"In this generation we're seeing record revenues for the U.S. and globally for the business, and we're seeing more people buying and playing games than ever before, and the Wii is definitely a part of that," he continued, adding that as the market continues to expand, gamers are going to want to "graduate to an Xbox 360 experience."

"Everyone say that eventually the novelty will wear off, right? I think that a lot of people that are buying [the Wii] today are not people that have generally bought consoles in the past, right? You see they're not buying games on it, right?" he said. "They're buying it, it's like something they break out when people come over, and it's maybe a fun thing, but it's almost like the same people that buy a karaoke machine, you know? They're not really buying it for games, they're just buying it as a novelty."

While Greenberg's optimism is commendable, the Wii continues to market saturation [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/83904]" for the console; over the same period, the Wii clocked more than 700,00 units sold.

... that guy looks scary, like he should be cruising a playground in an unmarked van for children.

Though overall I think the statement is "correct" to a degree, if Wii gamers start developing more "mature" or "Hardcore" game tastes, they will likely move to the 360 for their hardcore needs.

To tell the truth when I got a wii I was having fun but then the games got boring doing the same waggle motions for every game so I got bored very quickly with the system (to their credit wii sports is one of the most fun party games I ever played). I ended up trading it for a PS3 and that was a even worse move. I know I'm gonna be pissing off a lot of the sony faithful when i say this but the PS3 in my opinion (and I cant stress that enough) sucks. The games are the same you get on 360 except with framerate issues and download full games to the hard drive even though they have some exclusives they arent anything I havent seen before. So I say this I gotta agree cause I love the 360. Not to say all the game on it are masterpieces but in terms of sheer fun I've ever had with a system I gotta give it to the 360. But as they say numbers will tell the story at the end of the day.

I don't see a massive overlap between the people who want to play Wii sports and people who want gun-battle-slap-fight-12. Then again I could be wrong, my 2 year old cousin could wake up tomorrow and decide she doesn't want a Mii, she wants a Lancer instead.

Or maybe Aaron Greenberg should actually pay attention to who buys the Wii, then maybe he'll turn his attention to making the 360 work, then the RAF will commision it first squadron of Black Slavonians (Sus scrofa domestica vici!)...

I would graduate to the 360 if they had more than just a couple of games that I wanted to play. I bought Mass Effect for the PC a little while ago so there's goes my only real incentive for the system. That, coupled with the fact that the machine is a failure in engineering 101, means I ain't switching over anytime soon.

It's unfortunate because I was a huge fan of the original Xbox.

I completely agree with him, I for one am getting a 360 soon now that I'm sick of my Wii. Mind you it's only because Star Ocean 4 is coming out for it.

Though that guy really needs to work on the annoying way he talks, right?

To be fair, I had a 360 well before the Wii, but as far as comparative usage goes the Wii generally remains silent. We turn it on every so often when relatives come to visit so they can play Wii Sports, but other than that it pretty much just sits there. The most recent use was when I fired it up for a week or so to play Smash Bros. Brawl after launch.

I suppose one problem in our case is that Rock Band (which I have for the 360) is generally better than any of the other options for a 'party game' for any group of people that are likely to visit. I suppose if I had significantly older or younger people visiting the Wii would get more use, but the novelty factor of waving the remotes around doesn't really make up for the dearth of quality games to play on it.

I think they're more likely to upgrade to a PC really, given that it can do almost all of the XBox tricks and more.

Oh, and the PC doesn't drown in it's own red lights a month after it's bought either.

Agreed. Also, I've never heard of someone going from Wii to 360. It's always to PS3. Afterall, I've never seen someone who lourves Castlevania go to a system notorious for shit platformers and worse rpgs.
I second that, but either way M$ is getting your money. And that is mostly true, i went from Wii to PS3 (though admitedly i was going to buy the PS3 anyway, but i had thoughts about a 360 instead)

I've been a hardcore fan of Nintendo for almost 8 years now and over the last two years I've started watching more TV and playing more games on my computer. eventually curiosity got the better of me and I got a Dreamcast to find out why it never took off. After I was finished with Sonic Adventure I asked myself: When was the last time a Nintendo game made you have this much fun? And I kept coming back to Ocarina of Time. So I figured that if it had been so long since Nintendo had made a really good game and the future didn't look promising, It was time to upgrade. As of next Friday I will officially own a real next gen console and my plan to become king of all geeks and nerds will be underway!

Meh I would think people would go for a PS3 just because the Xbox 360 is notorious for failing now. But I really do not think that there will be significant overlap for people who bought a Wii before either of the other two consoles.

In March, the Xbox 360 sold less than 190,000 units, a flattening of sales that analyst Jesse Divnich said indicated "market saturation" for the console; over the same period, the Wii clocked more than 700,00 units sold.
Typo... Don't it needed to been like 700,000 or sumthin liek that?

I support the Wii to a degree, I like getting much better resolution and stuff out of my GameCube games, and I love the stability that the Wii has over other "next-gen" consoles. I enjoy SSBB more for the music as the controls have been dampened.

I do agree that the system should be rid of Friend Codes, DLC should be added (or improved in the case of SSBB), my pre-ordered GHIII should have had stereo sound, and the vertical positioning of the system causes discs to load wrong.

Until they get the 360's "gremlins" problem fixed, I will never buy the system. I know all too well how Microsoft's support system works, and why its best to avoid it at all costs.

As for the PS3, if it were cheaper, didn't play Blu-Rae discs (DVDs look just fine on my 32" wide and are cheaper), supported all of my PS1 and PS2 games, wasn't so BIG, I think I'd consider buying it...

Last but not least, PC gaming. As repetitive as the games have been getting (FPS, RPG, FPS, RPG), I think I'll stick to Star Trek: Armada 2 and RollerCoaster Tycoon 2...

I've had 360 for a while now, and I've experienced no bugs. None of the people I know that have a 360 have experienced bugs. If it gets a bug, you can get it fixed or replaced.

In short, what are you waiting for?
