Banning Violent Games Tops Conservative's To Do List

Conservative columnist and anti-feminist writer Phyllis Schlafly has a few zingers for New Year's Resolutions including instituting a ban on violent videogames.

I'm sure that many of you have resolved to be a better person in 2011, whether through a formalized list of Resolutions or merely choosing to eat a salad over that burger that's calling your name to offset the excess of the Holidays. *cough* *raises hand* But some people have more lofty goals than weight loss for 2011. Phyllis Schlafly, author of Feminist Fantasies [http://www.amazon.com/Feminist-Fantasies-Phyllis-Schlafly/dp/1890626465] arguing against the Feminist movement, decided to write a post on Townhall.com that outlines her resolutions for what the newly-elected Republican state senators in the US should make a priority in 2011. To be honest, most of Schlafly's resolutions are pretty boring governance issues like election fraud and taxes, but then you get about mid-way through the page and see this gem:

Videogames: "There shall be no sale, rental or arcade-playing of extremely violent videogames by children without parental consent." Explanation: Videogames are increasingly graphic and harmful.

There are a number of things wrong with this statement, which takes some things for granted while simultaneously presenting a very outdated impression of the videogame industry. First off, who plays games in an arcade anymore? It's like Schlafly is stuck in the 1993 Mortal Kombat controversy. The actual content of the resolution is something that I generally agree with - there are a bunch of games that I wouldn't want my child to play - but I don't think that legislating it is a good idea as it will lead to abuse.

The tone of Schlafly's "explanation" is the real problem here, though. It disturbs me that an intelligent person such as Schlafly clearly takes the fact that videogames are inherently harmful as a matter of fact. Well, we do not hold these truths to be self-evident. There is no actual evidence that videogames are harmful in any way or that they encourage negative or violent behavior. The recent Supreme Court arguments prove that not even the State of California could come up with compelling evidence that significantly swayed the opinions of the highest court in the land.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised. Reading the rest of Schlafly's resolutions leaves me equally stupefied. You think it's that important that Good Friday become a State Holiday? Or that it's worth writing a law against companies who "discriminate against the Boy Scouts"? Really?

Now, I'm a Conservative myself in many ways, but these people like her are all nuts and undereducated in this subject matter. I can't wait until the gaming generation takes over political offices.

Again, the parents need to do their fucking job.

MINI-RANT START

These kids didn't go out and buy the games themselves. They MIGHT have bought the headset with the $50 allowance their spoiled little brat ass gets every week, but they didn't buy the game himself.

/rant

Edit: Sorry. I've been playing a lot of Black Ops lately. And working at Gamestop lets me overhear these spoiled brats and their stupid, oblivious parents.

Alright, I'm going to nip this in the bud here: ONE CRAZY ***** DOES NOT REPRESENT ALL OF CONSERVATISM. STOP DOING THAT ESCAPIST.

I just came from Teamliquid where evidently all Texans are crazy because we don't like a fairly abusive new statute the EPA is trying to cram down our throats, I've had enough of political misrepresentation and ignorance today.

Okay... So she's a Conservative Anti-Feminist.

The fuck is she doing in politics?

Found that weird, since from her stance it seems she'd like to see women in the kitchen rather than doing anything else other than cooking or taking care of kids.

(Sorry if I offend anyone, just pointing out something I found odd)

When someone is a politician it is standard practice to mention their party alignment when introducing them. You'll notice that nowhere does it mention conservatives as a whole (except to say that she, A SINGLE PERSON, thinks they should do X Y & Z), the title is using Conservative's pertaining to a SINGLE CONSERVATIVE I'm sure. You're projecting.

I don't see a problem, you already can't sell M rated "violent" videogames to kids without parents buying it for them.

... *slowly raises hand, looking around the room with uncertainty*

There's banning violent games as a whole and making stronger measures to ensure that kids don't get their hands on AO games. I can't say what she's intending to fight for, so wont make any rash judgments on her part. I'm sure she's got more interesting and better things to do in the meantime.

I don't know how to really feel. I don't believe in what they are saying, but they do have point in wanting to relugate the ease of access to violent games for young kids but we already have that, the ESRB ( I think thats the name) but at the same time I don't understand when a twenty-something year old, says that if the law about games passes that it will effect him/her, because it won't he/she is old enough to buy violent games. As from what I heared the law apply to young kids. Anyway if someone could explain how it effect all gamers, I would like to know in all serious-ness. And finally it does come down to the parents or if by change a ten year old save up enough money to buy splatterhouse then it is up to store employees to realize the problem

Must be honest here, thought it was David Cameron's lot and started to panic. Should have guessed it was America what with the recent attempt at law change.

OT: Good luck doing that purely without parents help. Utimately your just hindering the stores efforts, not the kids who get mum and dad to buy the game for them.

The power of the liberal media of today has made it so that any one who is even remotely conservative is villainous.

I'm actually considering switching to Fox News just to see the other side of these stories.

I'm well aware of what it ACTUALLY says, but don't tell me you read it, read my post, then went back and re-read the thread title. It's completely misleading in its current wording as evidenced by a good number of posts in this thread ALREADY.

Schlafly? That pokemon's adorable! Oh, wait...

On a serious note, please remember that there are people on both sides of the aisle who want to ban violent videogames--this is not a purely conservative or purely liberal thing. The fact Rush Limbaugh is actually against the censorship of games says volumes.

So she's saying the parents don't pay attention to a game's rating, so let's make it a law the parent's wont pay attention to. lolwut? Ahh... the elderly with their arthritis and dementia. Bless her conservative little heart.

After I heard that, I actually started listening to his show for a bit. He's not all that bad, really...

I mean, he's got his own kind of bias, but who doesn't?

At least he's not as bad as fucking Rachel Maddow.
