Dead Space 2 Dev Gives the Game the Minecraft Treatment

A Visceral Games engineer who worked on Dead Space 2 has made his own trailer to promote the game - in indie sensation Minecraft.

Dead Space 2 hit store shelves last week, putting players in the shoes of the quiet but not silent [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/107150-Dead-Space-2-Hero-Not-Silent-But-Very-Quiet-Says-Visceral] Isaac Clarke as he continued to fight evil space monsters. The game had its share of official trailers, but Visceral gameplay engineer Michael Noonan decided to make one of his own - using Minecraft.

"The whole environment and shot set up I've done myself, though the actual scale of the marker is closer to the one in DS2," Noonan told Kotaku [http://kotaku.com/5747200/dead-space-2-designer-cranks-out-awesome-minecraft-trailer]. "I genned a couple worlds until I found a big mountain to put the marker inside, fortunately it was naturally hollow to begin with, I only needed to blow up a floor a bit."

Noonan says he didn't want to just copy the other existing Dead Space 2 trailers, as they focused on the new monstrosities Clarke & company would face - something he couldn't easily do in Minecraft. Instead, he just aimed for a spooky atmosphere. "I'm not really good at audio stuff, so I spent a couple hours looking for a creepy a [sic] lullaby until I found that Silent Night music box melody that just seemed to fit the theme perfectly."

It's certainly an eerie little melody, that's for sure.

One thing does seem strange to me. According to Noonan on the video description, he put the letters "'MA' 'KE' 'US' 'WH' 'OL' 'E' 'D' 'EA' 'SP' 'AC' on some of the blocks, in plain English." But the markings we see in the video look like random scrawls to me - I don't see the letters anywhere. It could have been a much more effective marketing tool if, y'know, it had the name of the game in the trailer.

(Thanks, Alai!)

That certainly was a creepy little tune. Sounded like a twisted verion of "Silent Night".
And that was cool how he made a big Marker in the mountain.

edit: Damn... the one paragraph I skipped over, it has the one thing I thought I was being clever about...

Dang that was one massive cavern and would be crazy to find in at least my world. Also a chicken managed to get its way to the marker most likely trying to become a necromorph so it would actually be a threat.

Minecraft is legitimately scarier than Dead Space 2. Especially early on in the game when you don't have any light sources other than perhaps burning things in your furnace.

Clearly an EA employee trying to justify his boss catching him playing minecraft at work.

I totally approve. :D

Good grief this was deeply entertaining...

I can just imagine Mine-saac seeing the chicken and being like 'DAMNIT! You're ruining my shot - again!!! Get oudda here!' *Commence ineffective beating*

Minecraft... I am now pretty sure I made the right decision to not buy it, lest my productivity plummet in to the negatives.

On another note, there's a comic in the Dead Space 2 promotional site that contains a cypher for the Unitologist lettering.

That's incredibly badass. I love DS2, and just got re-addicted to minecraft this week. I'm gonna try and make a model of the Ishimurra, though with my schedule who knows how long that will take...

Anywho, anyone know where I could get that suit skin? I gimprovised a version of it from the base skin, but the one they have there is pretty awesome too.

If you'd like it, my version of the skin is located here: http://img696.imageshack.us/i/minecraftcharacter.png/

Its truly amazing the things people are doing with minecraft. However I'll stick to my legos :)

Also, this must have been one fun work week, playing Minecraft all day.
