What If Super Mario Bros. Had Modern Sound Effects?

If Nintendo's sound engineers had had the same capabilities in 1985 that AAA-level games have today, Super Mario Bros. might have sounded a bit like this.

It's been over 25 years now since the 1985 release of the seminal Super Mario Bros., and it's safe to say that videogame technology has come quite a long way in those two-and-a-half decades. Graphics, control schemes, and sound technology are at levels now that videogame makers couldn't have even dreamed of in the early 80s.

Now, when your character sprints across an iron bridge in a warzone, you hear the ricochets of bullets against the structure, you hear your footsteps echoing against metal, and you hear your character grunt and gasp for breath as he slides into cover to regenerate health. Realistic sound goes a long way into making a videogame immersive.

As seen here, though, that really kind of depends on the videogame. One YouTube artist decided to remix the famous World 1-1 with modern "realistic" sound effects to accompany Mario's actions.

You know what? I think I'm going to stick with the old version, thanks.

Interesting. But I don't think the modern sounds fit the old style graphics, or even really the spirit of Mario Bros at all really. But still this is some good work, it must have taken some effort to do this.

I did like the down the pipe sound though and the hurt sound though those were pretty funny. And then the death scream.

I would have like to hear this with modern music too. Might have added something to the presentation.

I was expecting to hear the crack of both of Mario's legs breaking from every jump, but it is funny enough.

Funny, but the original sounds made the game fun along with other elements. or maybe its nostalgia talking... *breaks out NES*

haha, that was really funny.

I'd love to see someone take a crack at a modern version of that game with all the gritty realism we've come to know in our everyday games.

Thanks a lot. Now I'm picturing Mario hiding behind a chest-high pipe until the screen stops turning red.

That might be funny, actually, but I'm pretty sure we could find THAT on Newgrounds, no charge.
