As somebody who designs sound effects for a hobby, I found this video pretty lovely.

Man he died on the first level of Super Mario Bros.. That's like, grounds for execution in the gamer community, isn't it?
Here's a kind of related story to that. My friend, who is nearly 18 and plays nothing except the latest Fifa and the latest Call of Duty instalment, tried the original Super Mario Bros for the first time in his life last week. He ran into the first Goomba. If that wasn't bad enough, he then ran into the second Goomba. When he figured out how to jump, he managed to jump over the Goombas but then fell into the first pit. The game over screen was met with raucous laughter from all.

If the Escapist had sigs this would have become mine. (People do believe Funk speaks in Tarzan like speech, right?)

sound technology are at levels now that videogame makers couldn't have even dreamed of in the early 80s.
Super Mario Bros came out in 1985. In 1986, Dark Castle [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KCkbp4wurW0] came out on the Macintosh. It pretty much had the sound effects you hear in this video, and it kicked ass. Mario's sound effects are certainly iconic, but ask anyone with a Mac in those days - those Dark Castle sounds are stuck in our head 35 years later just as Mario's are in the head of all the Nintendo fanboys, and without the benefit of being remixed & revisited a million times over.

Im pretty sure the death scream was MK. Not all of it, but I am near certain of that atleast. (Im super hyped for the new game and have been surrounding myself with MK stuff, so Im feeling confident I can identify the sounds)

That was funny in a cute kind of way, but I'll stick to the good old fashioned sound effects. Nothing quite like 'em!

I think the uploader comments on the Youtube page for this video is awesome.

Some additional notes:

1) This video (part of my demo reel) helped me stand out enough to get hired at Volition. There are many extremely skilled sound designers out there, but when you're trying to stand out from a pool of 100+ applicants, it sure helps to show the team that you have a sense of humor -- because you can be damn sure they do.

I thought the "My arm!" shout was from MK too. Maybe a GC or PS2 MK.

Lol. That really doesn't fit.

Of course, that's not actually modern sound effect technology, it's 'realistic shooter' style sound effects.

Mario Galaxy has 'modern' sound technology... And mario has a voice, grunts when he falls, cheers when he gets power-ups... (And the game has an orchestral soundtrack too)

All stuff that wasn't possible in 1985, and yet it sounds nothing at all like this. XD

Man that sounds nothing like the original sound effects. Wait what were the orignal sound effects? All I can hear is donkey kong sound effects and those are not the same.

I was expecting to hear modernized versions of the old sound effects & music.

I feel somehow cheated. D:

It was funny. Obviously, no one is actually serious about making a mario remake like this.

That was what I was hoping too, and in fact a remastered version (true to the classic appeal of course) would be pretty awesome to play. Not just 'new' super mario brothers, which does more reminiscing than remastering.

Interesting. Now, I want to hear a modern game dubbed with old school sound effects.
Now THAT would be interesting! This, I unfortunately found dull.
