Google Building Ultra-Highspeed Internet Line in Kansas City

As part of an experiment on next-gen internet, Google has made plans to give Kansas City an fiber line with a 1 gigabit per second download speed.

Imagine what's possible with a 1 gigabit per second internet connection. You could download an HD movie in 5 minutes, video chat with your entire extended family with no network strain, and watch all the porn. Well, if you happen to live in Kansas City, you're in luck, because Google wants to give you the gift of crazy-fast internet.

In an attempt to find out what kinds of things the tech industry can do with such an astounding amount of bandwidth, Google decided to fund several "experiments" into high bandwidth networks, including the one it plans to build in Kansas City. The company asked for interested communities to let Google know that they wanted this uber-internet.

After about a year of rallies, YouTube channels, and open letters aimed at convincing Google to build the highspeed line at 1,100 cities around the country, the company finally settled on Kansas City. In a post on Google's blog, Vice President of Access Services Milo Medin said that in choosing a city, the company looked for somewhere " ... where we could build efficiently, make an impact on the community and develop relationships with local government and community organizations. We've found this in Kansas City."

Google says that the network should be up and running sometime in 2012, and that it is looking at bringing the extremely fast network to other cities around the country.

*makes plans to move to Kansas City* I'm already drooling at the thought of downloading Steam games in mere seconds.

I want really, really bad.

And I'm not all that far away...

1 gigabyte per second download speed:

'Cause crackheads and meth addicts REALLY love their internet!

XD

OT:

You had to have known that this was inevitable.

My internet is 1MB/s

For me, this would be like going from the stone-age straight beyond the future into the future future.

Now I also want to move to Kansas City.

Considering Vermont's internet stuff, we'll be getting this in 2020. Maybe, if we're lucky.

So how much does it cost to live in Kansas City?
I really hope this technology catches on and spreads to the rest of the US/ the world.

An fiber line?
Really?

Either way, this looks quite fun.

Lol, with those sort of speeds you'd start bottle-necking in your own hardware like as not ^_^ You'd have to get Cat 5e cables to handle the speed, and your router might just say no, lol. n top of that, connections outside Kansas City would be slower, so I guess you'd have to persuade Valve to set up a server there if you wanted to DL your Steam library in just a couple of minutes :D

You can never watch all the porn.
It's true. They produce that stuff at a rate many many times faster than you could ever watch it, even with a room full of screens...

Dear Google;

Please come to Canada and save us from the tyranny that is the big telecoms. That is all.

Sincerely,

All of Canada

AHEM: Gigabit, not byte

That's an eighth of the speed you're thinking of.

OT: I have a 256 kB/s DSL connection.

Fuck me.

Unless the servers where you want to download stuff from are based on Kansas you wont get all of its speed.

Excluding the bottleneck at the server end that's damn fast. That's reaching the point where what category Ethernet cable and network card you have in your PC actually matters for day-to day internet.

I'm pretty sure South Korea or Japan already gets speeds like that. Although I could be wrong.
