Physicist Definitively Rules Time Travel Impossible

A physicist at the University of Maryland says that time travel will never be possible, and he has the physics techno-babble to back him up.

Time travel is a really cool idea. Who hasn't thought about going into the future to check out the flying cars and sex robots, or going back in time to meet your grandparents - but never, ever assassinating Hitler [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ptitlekz83hawz]? Unfortunately, actually traveling through time seems to be the real sticking point - we don't have time travelers popping up here and there, so most people consider it an impossibility.

One physicist says that he has final and conclusive evidence that will rule out time travel once and for all. Via the use of metamaterials [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metamaterial] - artificial materials engineered to have properties that normally do not exist in nature - University of Maryland professor and metamaterial theorist Igor Smolyaninov simulated the flow of time by "mapping light distribution" in one of the aforementioned metamaterials.

Frankly, almost all of the scientific parts in Smolyaniov's PopSci [http://arxiv.org/ftp/arxiv/papers/1104/1104.0561.pdf] goes over my head - look, I haven't had a science class since High School, okay?

But taking the summary at face value, Smolyaniov found that not only is the flow of time inexorable and unstoppable in its progression (just ask anyone in their 30s and 40s, they'll tell you the same thing), but it's impossible to bend the progression of light (and time) back in on itself - at least, not on its former location.

All you need to know is that Smolyaniov simulated the Big Bang, saw in the scattering of light particles a simulation of the entropic forces that are slowly causing the heat death of the universe, and (apparently) proved that time travel is impossible.

It's kind of a bummer, isn't it? There's good news, though: Smolyaniov's experiment showed that while light can't be bent to go to its former location, it could go to somewhere like its former location - in another dimension.

So time travel is out, but visiting alternate realities and killing their Hitlers for fun could still be in! Keep the dream alive, guys.

He saids this now but when someone goes back in time and beats him over the head with a baseball bat he'll be sorry~

Chrono Trigger says otherwise, and my whimisical nature inlines me to believe the robot and the frog knight.

Those guys would never lie...

I like the idea of alternate realities. We'll fuck up their timelines, but keep our one pristine. ;)

Actually, he's not ruled out time travel into the future, which is sort-of possible. The faster you're moving, the slower time goes for you. Here's an example

You have 2 (theoretically) identical clocks. One stays in the exact same spot in on the planet, moving at the speed of the earth's orbit, whilst one is sent round the earth at such a speed that it returns to to its starting position (next to the other clock) in exactly one hour. The clock that orbited the earth in an hour would be slightly behind the other one, as it travelled faster.

Sure, it's not instant time-travel, but it's similar

I saw this Stephen Hawking show about time travel and he believed that going backwards was impossible but going forward by traveling at near light speed was! just it is a one way ticket

So...has the multiverse theory been proven then? That whole, killing alternate-Hitler seems like a fun idea but in the multiverse it could be that we're the only universe in which Hitler was 'evil'...

Anyway...it sucks that I can't go back in time but there's still the idea of freezing myself Futurama style so as to go into the future.

[HEADING=1]Dont lose hope![/HEADING]

Science updates theories on a regular basis.

All it will take is some new, previously undetectable something or a mad sub-theory to turn out to be right and it could happen again.

So no more time travel, but instead spontaneous alternate dementions creation? Why that sounds even better!

It's impossible because it can't be done just now. Who says his proofs are irrefutable?

Is he trying to say that we know all there is too know about this branch of physics, right now?
"Physicist thinks time travel is probably impossible based on all this sciencing" is a less grabbing headline. He either is certain he is right or certain no one will prove him wrong while he is alive... or this strand of divergent time.

I'm no physicist, but I've always deemed time travel impossible. I like that guy.
