TF2 Players Buy $430,000 in Hats for Japan

Either TF2 players really love Japan, or they really love virtual hats.

A few weeks ago, Valve added three new in-game hats [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/108719-Valve-Offers-TF2-Hats-for-Japan-Disaster-Relief] to the TF2 store in order to raise money for relief efforts in Japan following the devastating Sendai earthquake and tsunami. The "Humanitarian's Hachimaki," worn here by the Heavy, sold for $7.99, the "Benefactor's Kanmuri" (Sniper) went for $19.99, and the "Magnanimous Monarch" (on the right) cost a staggering $100.

For all we joke about the game becoming Hat Fortress 2, Valve's charity drive worked astoundingly well. According to the fire Sasha for twelve seconds [http://www.teamfortress.com/post.php?id=5254&p=1], don't you know?

Joking aside, that's really heartwarming to see such generosity from gamers, especially in a sluggish economy. Special mention goes to the crew at the Unusual Hat Club [http://www.unusualhatclub.com/forums/], who managed to raise $3,000 on their own. It may not be $430,000, but every little bit helps.

Well who's gonna say no to a totally bad-ass Hat? And even better it's a bad-ass hat with feelings!

No one, that's who...

I hate to be negative over such a positive effort, but I'm I'm honestly a little disappointed it didn't raise more.

If you'd check the blog, they started the Hats for Help on the 23rd of March and by just six days on the 29th, it had raised "over $300,000." However when the sale ended on the 6th of April ten days later, the grand total was $430,543.65.

If the same momentum from the charity's start continued through March 29th to April 6th, they would've raised over $500,000 during the last ten days and by the end received over $800,000: more than twice the amount we ended up with.

And yeah, I pointed out to nearly every TF2 player I knew about this. Though I feel some of this might've been because of the unreliable nature of the MannCo store.

It's genuinly funny that a terrible math joke (that got contradicted by Heavy's related achievement) got one-upped by a real-life charity drive.

Go Japan!

Good
though this all goes to Red Cross, right?

I heard the money that funnels in to the RC takes FOREVER to actually get to the disaster zone and help people out.

wish there were some more widespread charities to give to

Yup, here we go:
http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/world/la-fgw-japan-relief-20110404,0,7537892.story

Pretty much every one of these charity events goes through the Red Cross, and the Red Cross is a big dumb slow beast that is shockingly ineffectual at distributing relief funds.

You'd be better off just stuffing some cash in an envelope and mailing it to a hospital/shelter in Japan.

I misread it as "Player Buys $430,000 in Hats for Japan" and was slightly alarmed, but not all that surprised.
