Bethesda Wants Skyrim Mods on Consoles

Console gamers will have access to a whole world of Skyrim user generated content if Bethesda gets its way.

Although making mods for Elder Scrolls games will likely stay the exclusive purview of PC gamers, actually playing them might not be. Bethesda says that it is keen to get console gamers playing the mods for Skyrim [http://www.amazon.com/Elder-Scrolls-V-Skyrim-Xbox-360/dp/B004HYK956/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1303232836&sr=8-1] alongside their PC brethren.

Bethesda's Todd Howard said that the content made with the Skyrim Creation Kit would work on consoles just as well as it would the PC; it was, after all, the tool that Bethesda had used to make the game. The problem, Howard said, was that there wasn't an avenue for delivering the content to console gamers yet, but that Bethesda was talking with Microsoft and Sony in order to try and make it happen. Even if these efforts were successful however, he didn't think it would be something that would be up and running in time for the game's launch in November.

""We'd like to see it happen," he said. "Because it works, it's how we made the game. I think it's something really cool about what we do, but 90% of our audience is on the consoles, so 90% of our audience can't even see this thing. So if we can solve that we'd like to."

Mods for previously Elder Scrolls games have ranged from simple cosmetic changes like more attractive maps and new eye colors, to new items and equipment, to complete overhauls of systems and mechanics. If Bethesda is able to bring mods to consoles, it would not only bring console and PC gamers closer together, it would significantly increase the scope and longevity of Skyrim.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim comes out for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 on November 11th.

Hey, that would be something. I've always been jealous of PC gamers talk of mods in Oblivion. I'm sure it would just be a taste of what mods can offer, but I'd still be interested in it.

Yes, please. I modded the heck out of Oblivion, and it really made it so I was never bored with it. Naturally there's a lot of, uh, special interest... fleshy... mods, but there were actually rather a lot of high quality quest and companion mods out there that I felt really broadened the experience. I was thinking of getting Skyrim for the PS3 (after years of being a PC gamer primarily, I'm sick of constantly updating my hardware for newer games), and if they could make this work somehow it would seal the deal for me.

Betheseda: The company that loves its players. It's awesome that an RPG developer so strongly encourages user modifications and add-ons, because they know it makes the game's replay factor, SO MUCH BIGGER. I still play oblivion because of mods, to add it onto the console will only help makes things better.

I somehow feel like 90% is a drastic overstatement...

http://www.joystiq.com/2006/04/10/oblivion-records-record-sales-1-7-million-and-climbing/

The game only has 1 million 360 sales and 2 million PS3 sales to date (on vgchartz anyways, which doesn't have PC data).

So by their calculations the PC version only sold 333,333 copies? Despite topping the charts at release? Despite me going to 5 game stores and having every PC copy (but one collectors I finally found) sold out?

I like that they're bringing mods to consoles, but why do they have to downplay their immense PC fanbase?

Some mods are not entirely... gameplay enhancing. Some of them just add jiggle physics for women.

Not that I'm complaining.

I've wanted this for such a long time, mainly cause I just love messign with the asthetics of things :3

I don't have a PC that can handle games so I was always a little jealous of mods that PC users got. I would really love for this to happen.

Maybe this will work on PSN, but no way in hell does MS allow this to happen without charging for something, anything.

Well, Epic was able to do it with Unreal Tournament 3(the PS3 version at least), and according to Valve, you'll be able to play mods/maps of Portal 2 no matter what system your on. So yeah, this sounds very possible.

I'd love to see it happen. Although then I can't rub my console friend's faces in my awesome mods of greatness.

This is a great idea-- but how is Bethesda going to feel when Mommy Fatty Bottoms finds that her little angel has installed the S&M Skin Pack, making every character either a submissive nude man or whip wielding women in leather "armor"?

The media will love it.

My only worry is that Microsoft wont let them do it without charging for it. Which would suck, but I really hope they can make it work.

Mods for everybody! I may be a PC gamer, but I don't resent the fact mods may eventually become available for console gamers. As long as everybody is happy.

NO! Our only trump card! It's goooone! I'm just kidding. Mods are great and I want console gamers to enjoy them as well.

I hope they CAN make it easy for Console gamers to get mods.....but to be perfectly honest.....I doubt it. When you've got to go through the number of stringent security measures that lie within most console games, it can't possibly be easy.

What if Microsoft rolls out the derp mobile when they find out people have made Sex mods (believe it) for an Xbox 360 game, that just about anyone can access? What if FOX gets a hold of that info? Would MS risk another Se'Xbox fiasco, all in the name of gamer equality?

It could work like Halo Reach's Forge maps... you just go to a list of items and download them. I don't understand why everyone thinks you will have to pay for user created content.

I would love to see this, but Micro$oft and $ony are far too bull-headed to let it happen without them having absolute control of everything.
