Nothing is stopping them on the PS3. UT3 has had (pc) mod support for years.

MS has always hated the idea though. Hopefully they'll just ignore MS, and at least let us do it on the PS3 since they won't even need anything from Sony.

I know this thread is a month old, but is anyone else surprised by the frequently repeated assertions of imaginary issues. Issues like the following:

*The implication that for PC mods to work on the console porting (code alteration) will be necessitated.
*The implication or assertion that mods would have to be distributed through PSN/XBL.
*The refusal to acknowledge a console as a computer with almost all of the capabilities of a PC (albeit hidden by a slick interface).
*The assumption that bringing the console community into the modding community would require mod authoring tools for the console.

As has been previously stated, Unreal Tournament 3 has supported mods from its inception. It is apparent that making PC mods available on consoles is firmly within the realm of possibility. Also, the command console has been lacking from console games from the dawn of time with few exceptions. A recent example of this inclusion is the retention of a command console in Two Worlds II. Many of the issues brought up are mute points, insignificant gripes, or misinformation spread by someone who lacks a complete understanding of the topic.

Bethesda will create the structure upon which mods are created. The choices they make in designing this structure will dictate the extent to which mods are cross-platform capable. In theory, they should be able to create something that retains functional compatibility in all but the most extreme of circumstances. If done well, this will allow most mods to be used seamlessly across platforms.

I believe that Bethesda will provide their own framework for some or all of the following: browsing, downloading, and/or installing. This framework will either be integrated into the game client or a stand-alone utility which is downloaded or installed from the game disc. This software should allow the gymnastics that may be required to install a mod to be completed on a console; however, it is far more likely that the new modding platform will circumvent some of these downfalls in previous modding platforms. My .02. Feel free to tear me a new one.

Go Bethesda!

My reasoning is only because console users and publishers and developers won't appreciate them.

For PC, mods are essential. They've spawned some of the best games ever made. You have a community on PC that appreciates them and over the past decade, developers and publishers have taken a GIANT dump on the modding community. It's hard enough finding games that are moddable, let alone fully moddable, because "It takes time to release an SDK" and "It's too hard". Boo-fucking-hoo.

I object to releasing mods to consoles. Let console users experience the sweat, blood and tears that it took to form the modding communities of today.

I object to PC modders catering to the same asshole executives who have gone out of their way to treat modding communities like crap.

At the end of the day my opinion probably doesn't matter. However, I post it anyway and also, I bet that if console modding ever became popular, mods as a whole would become simpler and gradually fade away, just like RPGs have become simpler due to consoles to the point that RPG elements have disappeared almost completely, just like FPSs have become simpler due to consoles, etc.

I'm setting up my little wooden barrier against any such a development right here. Join me if you care about the future of mods.

I'm also not responding to anyone else. I think my point is clear.
QQ moar Mr. PC elitist.

Playing on the PC doesn't make you special, nor does it entitle you or anybody to mod tools. SOME devs are nice enough to give them to us but tht doesn't mean developers that dont are "asshole executives".

Seriously, what makes PC users like you an me more entitled to the mods than console users?
Do you donate money to modders? Do YOU mod?

Im going to assume not, since the whole the point of modding is sharing your work freely with others, and you don't seem to realize mod tools are a pain in the ass using a controler.
THANK YOU!!! i hate PC elitists who act like anyone who plays consoles dont deserve squat. it took me months to get amnesia to work on my comp due to these jackasses going "lol u dnt now wut 2 do. u dnt dsrve 2 ply ths gme". truthfully, that attitude is why i personally believe that PC gaming is dying. as they ostracize any and all newcomers
You know that PC gaming isn't actually dieing. Publishers have had some of there best years ever recently. Also the being a Witcher PC exclusive didn't stop it from selling 1.1 million plus copies. PC gaming is anything but dieing.

Are there any developments negative or positive about this?
Funny you should ask...

It's not directly related but Bethesda's setting up of a 'mod repository' on Steam is a step in the right direction for modding on consoles, believe it or not. Think of it partly as a 'proof of concept' work with an eye for setting up something similar for XBL and PSN. If they can get all the bugs ironed out on Steam they have a better chance for convincing MS and/or Sony that the idea has real merit.

The 2 real stumbling blocks to bringing PC style modding to consoles are Console Manufacturer resistance to the idea and... well, to be blunt... the extremely limited RAM of consoles.
