SAO I can agree since they treat their women like crap on a stick, but Mikasa is almost always portrayed as the most competent person of everyone that isn't Levi (or whatever the leader of the scouts name is). She's not overtly sexualized, she has agency, and she's a fuckin badass with that equipment. Even better, they actually made a women that has muscles without being creepy about it. I know its weird to say, but how often do you see a cut women in anime that isn't a mountain of a women? Its great and I love it.
Totally agree that she should have made the list. Although not so much on the muscles bit. You don't see a lot of characters like her in anime, and certainly not in Shounen. While she does have some dependency issues with Eren, I think her other qualities are enough that it doesn't really detract.

How the hell did they make this list with only one one character from FMA? The fact that Olivier Armstrong didn't make the cut is a crime

Revy's ommission is a strange one since she is as gritty and blood soaked as they come - she wouldn't be out of place in a John Woo film if John Woo did a load of crack. I must admit I found Deedlit's inclusion a nice surprise, she was a rather charming character. The Major of course render the list obsolete in her absence so thumbs up for not fucking that up. The real surprise entry was Ed since she's from Bebop which also had Faye but Ed is certainly a more unique character and is badass in her own way.

I dunno, this list strikes me a little as "my favourite anime girls from the 90s" rather than anything else. If "kick ass" means formidable or competent, I could name quite a few others even within the same genre or show. For example Sailor Moon, Usagi's entire shtick is that she is the audience surrogate, the everygirl with a big heart. Her competency at anything is practically zero but she is the one who holds the team together. Mars has spiritual powers, Venus is supposed to be their field captain (something neutered in the anime), Mercury is the brains and Jupiter is the brawn. Usagi is pretty much the mutual friend that makes them a team. Important? Yes, certainly. Kickass? That is a whole other matter. If you wanted a magical girl in the list, why not Nanoha Takamichi (Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha)? Her grown up version is the kind of person who decides that if the enemy is at the other end of a massive battleship, then I simply have to shoot through the battleship.

At lot of very badass ladies did not appear, notably anyone from Attack on Titan, Kill la Kill or Black Lagoon. Notable because these shows have female characters that serve as main combatants of their respective organizations/teams. No one from the old Big Three (One Piece, Bleach and Naruto) appear although they have large numbers of female characters. Also lacking are heroines who largely get by through their wits. Chiko from Daughter of Twenty Face or Maou from Maoyuu X Yuusha are excellent examples of female characters who are kickass because of their brains. Youko from the Twelve Kingdoms is another good example of a female character who grows into asskicking during the run of her show. Overall its a somewhat nostalgic list but from the commentary, I can imagine that a lot of people have their own candidates who failed to appear. Heck even if you restrict it to the era of Ghost in the Shell to Cowboy Bebop, there are still characters like the Knight Sabers (Bubblegum Crisis) or Rally Vincent (Gunsmith Cats) who could qualify.

You put Usagi on the list but not Sakura Kinomoto? YOUR LIST IS BAD AND YOU SHOULD FEEL BADI respectfully disagree with your opinion.

I'd say that this is with good reason, most of the women from the "Big Three" are pretty pathetic (At least Bleach and Naruto, not as familiar with One Piece).

In Naruto I really can't think of a single character. The main female character is just unbelievably useless. At the very beginning of Shippuden she flirts with a brief stint of competence (Against Sasori) then she fades back into basically not doing anything important every again. Seriously, I remember one episode where the only thing that happened since the beginning of the previous one was that she cried.

In Bleach, for the longest time I thought that Rukia was actually a talented Soul Reaper, and just had to get her powers back. Nooope. She basically does nothing useful after she gets her powers back. Yuroichi might be the closest to badass in the show, but there's still loads of other anime characters I'd put above her.

Bloody hell! Why didn't I think of Rally or the Knight Sabers? Those shows were great.

This is the part where we complain about missed inclusions, so - personally, I would have ranked Saber from Fate/Stay or Revy from Black Lagoon above a few on the list.
Exactly what I was thinking... seriously don't understand why Bulma was included over Saber or Revy.
Or even Launch or Chi-chi of the same series.
Especially Chi-Chi when you consider that, near the end of DBZ, her husband and eldest son are the most powerful characters in the series, each capable of benchpressing planets, and both run for the hills when she gets angry.

Yeah, but if you included Revy you'd have to include Balalaika, which means you'd also have to include Roberta. Seriously, almost the entire list could've been Black Lagoon.

Shame I didn't see one for Balsa from Seirei no Moribito, but it's nice to see Dola got a spot.

Aw, shame there's no Knight Sabres on the list (Bubblegum Crisis) or the Magic Knights from Rayearth, though manga versions only. (seriously, anime Hikaru really got on my nerves and Fuu and Umi spent most of the time being hit with the distress and/or idiot ball to help Hikaru be even more 'awesome')

My favourite is Dorothy Wainwright, from Big O.

She's a super strong, super fast, super capable android. At the same time she is a snarky, unflappable, loyal, French maid. The best part is that despite having all those attributes, she is somehow not obnoxiously sexualised like a lot of other anime badass girls.

Wow...what a hilariously predictable and stereotypical list!

Why no Yuno from Future Diary?
Why no Lucy from Elfen Lied?

Come to think of it...I'd like to see Yuno fight Lucy. :3

Bah, I only come to these lists to point out how flawed they are. When Bulma makes the list over Chichi, you know the list is invalid.

No Revy from Black Lagoon is bad enough. But skipping SIR Integra Fairbrook Wingates Hellsing? For shame.

Disappointing to see Balsa from Moribito didn't end up on the list, she is one of the best examples of "badass female protagonist" in Anime. That series in general deserves more recognition than it gets.

I've already seen most of who I would have included, but let's not forget both Rider and Tohsaka... also Sakura Matou but that is less commonly known. She fucking scares me.

Oh, and the mother of the Church of Violence in Black Lagoon. Kindly old lady shooting a Desert Eagle at you. Badass.

Miu Furinji from Kenichi:The Mightiest Disciple and Akane Tendo (maybe Shampoo, too) from Ranma 1/2 would be my additions.
