Notch's Mojang Wants to Publish Another Minecraft

With all of the money Minecraft is pulling in, Mojang is in a position to help other independent developers get their games out there.

The story of a lone game designer making something special that happens to catch on with a wide audience all over the world is really quite remarkable. Selling Minecraft before it even left the alpha stage has made Markus "Notch" Persson a vast amount of dough (more than $33 million) [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/109044-Minecraft-Sales-Figures-Reveal-33-Million-in-Diamonds], and with that capital he formed a company called Mojang to continue making games. The business development director of that new company, Daniel Kaplan, now finds himself in the excellent position of being able to invest in whatever he would like. But what is Mojang interested in funding? Well, more independent development of games, as early as this year.

"We are in a great spot right now, we can basically do whatever we want to. The hardest thing for us right now is to say 'no' to all the deals we're being offered," Kaplan said. "We're looking into publishing our own games too though, bringing indie games under our own brand. We're still figuring out how that's going to work.

"We hope to have something out this fall at least, some co-published games."

Kaplan knows that there are opportunities for Mojang to enter the console space, perhaps with its new game Scrolls [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/108156-Minecraft-Studio-Unveils-New-Title-Called-Scrolls], but for now the company wants to use its clout to empower other independent studios. "We hope to help people, to keep them involved in the process and create a successful game, to make sure people know about their games so they can create better games later on by themselves. So we'll see how well we can work that position," he said.

Mojang really is in a unique position. The company is lean, with only ten or so employees in a setting not usually associated with game design - Stockholm, Sweden. But the company has a hit game that is self-published, netting a huge amount of cash. Most independents have to scrape the barrel to find any kind of funding, but not Mojang. I think it's awesome that Kaplan and Notch have resisted the temptation to sell out and join a major company, and are instead hoping to help other developers get their start.

I'm glad they want to use that money for good, not for evil.

They're in a great position to become an awesome publisher/Developer instead of a developer depending on a publisher.

When I first saw the article title, I thought Notch was wanting to make a sequel to Minecraft. I was thinking, "uhh, shouldn't he finish this one first?". But anyway.

More support for the indie industry can only ever be a good thing. Publish away Notch; it's not as if you really have to worry about budgets all that much.

Well alright this will hopefully lead to many great things.

While I despise the indie genre, this is still great news.

Mojang publishing games, huh?

Hm, I wonder if in ten years we will be cursing Mojang the way we do with EA and Activision. After all, they started small too.

"Bloody Notch, what a greedy bastard. He makes me wish Bobby Kotick hadn't been run over by a combine harvester and eaten alive by rapid field mice."

Hmm.... So Mojang want's to start an "Indie label" to fund independents?
I approve, as long as they don't turn into an industry raping behemoth 15 years from now (see Activision)

I see absolutely no problem with helping publish fellow indie titles.

Definitely misread that as wanting to pump out another Minecraft, which scared me.

Doesn't indie only mean "not dependent," really? It still stretches over all genres, from FPS to RPG, how can you hate that?

I'm not sure "indie" is a genre.

The title led me to believe that they were actually going release another Minecraft, but whatever.

1. Earn profit from a game
2. Invest profit into more games
3. ???
4. PROFIT!
5. Invest profit into more games
And so forth.

Mojang, the next Valve? Could happen..... ;)

Game development NEEDS to become more accessible, and we're seeing steps in that direction every single day. There will come a day when any group (or even individual) with a great idea for a game will have 5 different, relatively simple ways to launch his game up to the World. And ON that day, I shall host a party. There will be cake!

Once Notch cashes out they will.

I'm not aware of many good game developers that went publisher and didn't turn into vapid shit within that time frame.

Look on the bright side, you only get 3-4 15 year spans on the American diet anyways.
