Wet 2 Dries Up

It looks like the sequel to Wet [http://www.amazon.com/WET-Xbox-360/dp/B000XJS00K/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1305646976&sr=8-1], the 2009 third-person action game from A2M and Bethesda, won't be happening.

Wet wasn't exactly a huge hit when it came out in September 2009, ringing up a flat 70 at 1Up [http://www.metacritic.com/game/playstation-3/wet/critic-reviews] rated the game a paltry 67/100, writing, "Wet has the making of a universe I'd like to revisit, but I'd want to see the same amount of polish that's been afforded to the wrappings in a follow-up." And despite the muted reaction, a follow-up was indeed planned. "Wet 2 (multi-platform), Naughty Bear 2 (multi-platform), Doritos Crash Course (XBLA) as well as Rango (multi-platform), which was announced by EA and Paramount Digital Entertainment on November 4th, are all currently in development at Behaviour," Senior Vice President of Business Development Jamie Leece said in November 2010.

Not a whole lot of ambiguity there, but it would appear that the situation has changed somewhat between then and now. A LinkedIn profile belonging to Ian Cormier [http://www.linkedin.com/in/iancormier], a technical artist at EA Montreal who previously served as a 3D artist and lead technical artist at A2M/Behaviour Interactive, lists among his credits Wet 2 for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 but notes that it has been canceled. Another profile belonging to a current Behaviour Interactive programmer also mentions Wet 2 but categorizes it as a "past project."

According to Siliconera [http://www.siliconera.com/2011/05/17/did-behaviour-cancel-wet-2/], "a number" of Behaviour Interactive employees who had been working on Wet 2 left the company in March and April of this year for jobs with other studios.

(Just to annoy Hankman ;))

Perhaps they could have just have more accurately portrayed it's female role? Just a thought...

Oh well. Not like the world needs more mediocre third person shooters anyway. We already have inFamous 2 coming out next month to fill that niche.

To be honest I was surprised it was considered for a sequel at all. I don't remember hearing about the game selling well at all. At best I was told the game was "just okay," which doesn't sound like much to make a sequel off of.

I was not a fan of Wet, but more importantly this article seems to imply that people take metacritic seriously. Only clueless people and terrible publishers take metacritic seriously. Metacritic needs to die honestly.

I'm so glad Bethesda has the integrity to just call it quits on a potentially shitty franchise. It puts those completely unwarranted sequels to previously shitty games to absolute shame. I'm mainly looking at the usual suspects like Kane and Lynch and Army of Two. Though sometimes a sequel to a shitty game can produce pleasing results; see Just Cause 2.

is a souless commercialisation of critical opinion that motivates developers to avoid innovation and stick to rehashing call of duty, FIFA and Madden until the industry disappears all the way up its own snughole.

I have serious doubts that it was metacritic that caused the Wet project to die. The primary mechanic of constantly sliding in bullet time was so overused that it became boring and almost the defacto means of moving about the world. I get that they wanted it to be some sort of kung fu homage with the monster closets but the overuse drove the game to Boring Town.

If they would have plotted the game around the story and put less emphasis on stupid mechanics driving the game it could have been epic. Take out the unending bullet slide, wave based monster closet areas and the ungodly amount of quick time events and it might have been a hit. The world is certainly a place many gamers would love to visit and explore.

In fact you can almost compare Wet directly with Bayonetta. It had a lot of the same elements but where Wet forced you into constant repetitive sameness Bayonetta continued to evolve as you played and forced you to used mechanics in different ways. Witch Time was a bonus for doing something right whereas bullet time was an always available button press. Even the wave based areas were well broken up with non quick time set pieces. If you need a very direct comparison check out the highway sequence in Bayonetta vs the highway sequence in Wet.

I have to think that internal testing was the cause of the project shutdown. Producers probably found testers asleep at their stations with their noses firmly pressed down on the slide button. Or something like that...

This is funny...because everything I've seen/heard/played (it had a demo) of Army of Two made it into a much better game overall.

The best part of Wet was the soundtrack anyways. I'll pick it up when it hits the less than $10 mark. It was a fun rental, though. Not gonna lie.

Personally I found them to be rather draining
I sea what you did there. But before there's a flood of complaints, I'll take a different ark. To give it it's dew, Wet wasn't a total washout, although the game was met with a pail reception. It ran out of steam early on though when all the action seemed to vapourise.

Wet had an awesome soundtrack and some decent scenes in it, their pacing however, was terrible :p

Edit: Meaning i'm not surprised, although I am disappointed

This is good news since looking at the gameplay videos of the first game, this doesn't deserve a sequel. But I do admit, the music was the only thing I liked about Wet.

THAT'S HORRIBLE!

They canceled Naughty Bear 2? Now we'll never have the conclusion to the first Naughty Bear!

Everyone could see the sequel potential in that instant classic, and now it's ruined!
