Nintendo Admits It Was Hacked, but Says Users Are Safe

Nostalgia may have saved Nintendo from a more serious intrusion.

Sony isn't the only console manufacturer that's getting attention [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/110608-Sony-Website-Hacked-By-the-Lulz-Boat] from hackers; Nintendo has admitted that it was also the target of an attack. However, while Sony lost all kinds of personal details as a result of the attacks against it, Nintendo says that hackers didn't get to any customer information.

Nintendo spokesperson Ken Toyoda announced the attack over the weekend, but said that there had been no "third-party victims." The attack was seemingly the work of hacker group "LulzSec," which recently attacked the Sony and PBS websites. According to the group's Twitter feed [http://twitter.com/#!/LulzSec/status/76782021116051457], it only grabbed a server config file as a warm up for other "operations." The group stressed [http://twitter.com/#!/LulzSec/status/76783069939511296] that it wasn't targeting Nintendo for more attacks, saying that it loved the N64 too much and the intrusion was just a bit of fun. LulzSec said [http://twitter.com/#!/LulzSec/status/77335808792727552] that it didn't mean any harm, and that Nintendo had already fixed the vulnerability.

It's hard to tell whether it was good security or just Lulzsec's nostalgia that protected Nintendo from a much more serious intrusion, but whatever the reason, it sounds like the company was quick to react to the attack. All the same, it's a little troubling that LulzSec was able to grab files from Nintendo's servers and write it off as effectively nothing more than a prank.

I am so... what would the word for this be? Peeved? Exasperated? Outright sick of all these shenanigans? I get why people are mad at Sony, but these guys state that they didn't even have any major beef against Nintendo. What the heck?

Sounds more like a group of amateur hackers weren't able to accomplish anything, so they felt making up excuses for it would save some face.

These groups work by targeting vulnerable sites that they can get into and stir up trouble in easily. It's unlikely they're capable of doing anything more than that.

It seems more like LulzSec hopped on the Sony bandwagon because they knew it'd get them attention. They're not targeting anything for any reason beyond lulz.

I don't know what they'd do with Nintendo, anyway. Very little of Nintendo involves online interaction, and Nintendo doesn't require any useful personal information from you if you do register on their official site. What're they gonna do, take out our points? Knock out WiiWare? Throw off online SSB:B? Nintendo's just got less to mess with, hence not much lulz involved. They wanted it to seem like they were being good little nostalgia-gripped kiddies, but really, they probably just found nothing.

OH ho ho... So Sony wasn't the only one attacked. Granted they didn't loose info like Sony had, people cannot simply clame Sony's security was lax. It still wasn't foolproof and needed updating, but Nintendo isn't exacly invincible either.

Makes me wonder what the situation with Microsoft is. Though honestly, people hack personal computers all the time, so they probably wouldn't notice the difference.

It'd be nice if these guys could make a mistake and get caught because that would be really nice.

I love how the internet has evolved to the point where people can "Toll/Lulz hack" a website and the internet just gives a collective smirk and shrug.

That's because if you have brains , you know they are talking about the company image, nintendo is the most friendlies companies ever, there was no point of proving anything.

Do you guys actually realize from what this SONY thing started, ... it's super simple. Sony totally disabled and prevented any further use of LINUX on the PS3 like a year or more ago, making those people angry ... that's why the FAILOVERFLOW started to get serious, that's why geohot ... that's why rage at sony , because sony did this to their self, PS3 came out with ADVERTISMENTS that it can run LINUX and was marketed OFFICIALLY.

They took LINUX away, they attacked the linux hackers who were only trying to get linux up working , NOT PIRACY, .... and they paid for it. FailOvefl0w has always stated it does not do that for piracy, and they cracked it but they wouldn't released --- idk what happened between why FO even released something ... but geohot made a jailbreak and released it based on the exploit that failoverflow made.

If they got linux to play with (they werent using linux to try to pirate it, nobody just did it because everyone was busy with other projects such as Wii ... which is what is a MORAL OF THIS WHOLE THING . HACKERS WILL ALWAYS ATTACK WHAT IS THE MOST LOCKED OUT SYSTEM - they shifted toward PS3 IMMEDIATELY as Linux was disabled in a frimware update.

That's why, if you're nice and support the customers, have a lot less chance of getting outright hacked unless you PROVOKE the attack, and sony is incompetent, their security SUCKS, they just weren't attacked before, it's really not that they had better security not by a long shot, not in a million years.

When they got linux, all were happy, nobody seriously tried or hyped hacking it for piracy, only minor stuff such as basement idiots who operate file sharing sites ... but those were 16old script kiddies they never broken anything serious to crack the PS3 ... and Sony was afraid of those kids using linux typing commands and "magically" crack it, that's how the company is totally wrong at what their perception is, only serious guys who are at college actually know stuff and those guys aren't idiots they would just hack it for lulz.

Only when there are vulnerabilities present. IE someone hasn't updated Windows in a long time or has no firewall/antivirus. Hackers are like water, they'll always take the easiest path from one place to the next. Which means Sony is the easiest target.
Which means that Nintendo was the second easiest target and MicroSoft is the.... We'll see.

Honestly, I don't think Sony was targeted simply because they were the "easiest target". That completely ignores recent history. I'd say that Sony painted a target on their chest. Keep in mind, no one hacked PSN or any other service until recently. This reeks of people getting a taste of the original hackers and now trying to copycat it. Which means they have to target other services as well in order to be special and different. I wouldn't be surprised if other services are targeted, too, soon (not thinking of just Microsoft but also Blizzard and similar services). I hope not, but only time will tell. And time probably favors the hackers.

Ha, I wonder if they have tried and failed to compromise Microsoft yet. I bet over the years of them being "the bad guys", MS have more robust defences.

This. I have plenty of financial troubles as it is without people stealing my information. Here's hoping they leave Steam alone.
