EndWar For PC Delayed By Piracy

Ubisoft's [http://endwargame.us.ubi.com/] Michael de Plater says rampant PC piracy is to thank.

EndWar Creative Director de Plater told Total War [http://www.videogaming247.com/2008/10/07/endwar-for-pc-yeah-says-de-plater/], which are PC games. In many ways, gameplay-wise, it's a modern warfare, Tom Clancy version of Total War," he said.

But don't expect it to come anytime soon. In follow-up comments [http://www.videogaming247.com/2008/10/08/ubisoft-creative-director-piracys-basically-killing-pc/], de Plater became the latest developer to blame the declining PC market on rampant piracy. "To be honest, if PC wasn't pirated to hell and back, there'd probably be a PC version [of EndWar] coming out the same day as the other two," he said. "But at the moment, if you release the PC version, essentially what you're doing is letting people have a free version that they rip off instead of a purchased version. Piracy's basically killing PC."

"The level of piracy that you get with the PC just cannibalizes the others, because people just steal that version," he added.

Tom Clancy's EndWar is set for release in early November for the PlayStation 3 [http://www.xbox.com] and PSP.

i no why he has a problem, noone wants there work to be taken free of charge, but...

he seems to think that he wont sell any copies and they will ALL get pirated, thats not true, alot of the pirates are doing it for either to test the game or because its overpriced (and yes i no not all of them do it for that).

i would laugh so hard if someone ported this to PC and everyone just downloaded that xD

I can't help but wonder how much good this is going to do. They, pirates, will still crack the console version. I, in the mean time, will be spending my money on independent and Stardock games. When this game finally does roll-around there's a good chance my entertainment budget will be empty for awhile and they still will have lost a sell. I understand how frustrating it is to have something you made taken out of your control. Sometimes though you just have to let go.

Publishers really have to get over this whole piracy thing. The cat is out of the bag, now deal with it. Because if you don't someone else will. We saw this happen with the music industry: Record companies bitched and moaned about piracy during the Napster era and ultimately squandered their chance to adapt, leaving room for Apple to swoop in with iTunes.

Whine now, pay later.

"Piracy's basically killing PC"
Actualy it is greed that is killing the PC as a gaming platform. All games have to be developed on a PC for the simple fact that consoles don't have keyboards. So we know it is not a compatability issue. But games like this will not be released on PC first because publishes know they will make more money if is has been out on console for months prior to the PC release.

Admitidly piracy contributes to this lessening off profit, but this de Plater guy is pretty much saying "We will not release for the PC right now, even though we can, because we will not make as much money as if we made this console exclusive." He is well within his rights to do so, but he shouldn't expect much empathy from the likes of me and the rest of the PC gaming community.

Exactly, these people only project an image of whiny kid into my brain. Adapt or drown, quit bitching and deal with it.

I can see this turning into another Devil May Cry 4.

Sells tons on the consoles, port to pc, get abysmal sales because no PC Gamer gives a shit about your game because they own it for the console already, then blame piracey and say SEE THAT'S WHY WE DIDN'T DO IT IN THE FIRST PLACE BAWWWWWWWWWWWW.

This guy is just being a lazy whiny *****. Plenty of PC Games these days make tons of money on the PC, he just knows he has a shitty game on his hands and wants to cop out, just like Lucasarts and just like Epic.

I know guys! Let's not even try to sell the product, we'll surely be better off then if we tried.

I think there's a bigger reason behind it and he just took the chance to blame piracy.

Like I said before, piracy is an issue for PC gaming but it isn't nearly as epidemical as these people are saying. We'll never find a complete solution to piracy, so hurry up and find a better solution like, I dunno, trusting your fans? No, I'm just kidding, you can't trust them, but there has to be a better solution to this.

Funnily enough, me and my friend were talking about EndWar today and he said he was going to get it for PC.

PIRACY?!?! FOR A DELAY?!?! ARE YOU JOKING UBISOFT?!?!

OK, so I'm going to get a console RTS ported later because of Piracy?!

I swear, I thought you would do it to...oh I dunno - POLISH IT FOR THE PC!

PC gamers are going to be dissapointed once they realize that they are playing a tutorial for World in Conflict with confusing voice commands. Seriously, this game is way too small scale and simple for PC. Ubisoft said so themselves.

-and Hey! No need to memorize hot keys, now you just memorize confusing voice commands!

My major concern is whether it'll understand accents... I mean, it would be a very painful experience if it misinterprets my every command because the developers didn't factor in the fact that the English, Australians, Canadians, etc, don't have stereotypical accents.

People also make Piracy sound like this -

"IT MUST BE ERRADICATED! WE WILL DIE IF IT CONTINUES!"

Piracy practically revolutionized the Music and Movie industry, and it's a minor cause that gave us digital distribution in all mediums. It supports underground markets, which is why you'll see Piracy going off the charts in Asia, and even Australia thanks to Mr. Atkinson giving all the good stuff to the non-aussies.

EDIT:

From people who told me about their hands-on experiences...a lot of people said "Endwar doesn't like my accent".

lets hope they work out the kinks.

Personally, I subscribe by the idea that if you pirate a game and like it, you should then buy a copy to support the developer. If you didn't like it, don't pay for it. It's kind of like renting games, in a way, but most people don't buy a game that they rented and liked.

From what i've seen (not heard atleast) when you say something it gives you a list of other things you can say to command them. I'd hope you'd just have to speak loudly and clearly, but you'd need a good mic I'd assume.

Piracy is the same as renting.

The developers get no money when people rent games.

At all.
