GameStop Would Like To Buy Your Old iPhone

Actually, the retail chain wants any iOS devices you've got lying around, including iPads and iPod Touches.

GameStop's business model for dealing with used games and hardware has proved to be pretty successful for the company so far. However, the real money-makers are apparently iOS devices like iPhones, iPads, and iPod Touches, and it turns out that the company is rolling out a new program that will let customers trade them in for store credit.

9to5Mac managed to get the screenshot seen here and the smaller print reads as follows:

"Did you know that GameStop now buys your old iPod, iPhone and iPad devices? Trade them in at GameStop for in-store credit. Perfect for trading toward games, accessories, systems and more. Bring in your old iPod or iPad and a Game Advisor can assist you. Plus, you'll score PowerUp Rewards points on every item traded."

Apparently GameStop rolled out the new trade-in program with a minimal amount of fanfare last week at a Las Vegas trade show. That said, not all stores are actively participating in the program, so you might want to call your local one up and check before you march on down to make a trade.

There are a couple of other details that aren't entirely clear with this program: Exactly what devices will be accepted for trade-in and just what exactly will GameStop be doing with all this old Apple gear? Will they be re-sold in stores? Be sold to another company for some other nebulous use? Used for skeet-shooting? I guess we'll have to wait and see.

This seems quite interesting. I have a couple of old iPods lying around that I could use. I wonder how much credit you get?

Why not just sell them on eBay? I guarantee you'll get much more for them then those cheapasses at Gamestop are likely to give you.

*hugs iPod*

They can have my portable music device when they pry it from my cold, dead hands.

Or when they give me something better and stand around while I transfer my music to it.

Damn it, I gave my iPod Touch to my sister-in-law when I got my iPhone. Still have an old nano lying around, though...

They should make it a sport. I'm sure they could fill stadiums with people craving the destruction of our expensive gadgets.

Yup...and people would pay loads of emone, probably, to be in the garbage zone and get showered in parts as the gadgets were shot down.

Preeeeetty much, yeah.
iType device have really good resale value and there is no chance in hell that Gamestop will give you anything close to what you would get selling them normally.
Hell, there is a shop around here, selling nothing but dolled-up used Apple products for close to retail price.

They're going to reverse engineer them and use the technology for something sinister-sounding.

I only got a new iPhone when my old one crapped out. (suspiciously not long after the iPhone 4 came out) Honestly I'd just like to bring it some place I know it would recycled/disposed of properly. I've got tons of tech related crap lying around my house that's either very outdated or just flat broken. I don't feel right just chucking either when I know we have the ability to recycle it, but the only tech recycling center within driving distance was an hour away, closed down a few years ago, and only accepted tech junk by the ton.

You know what gamestop? Start a program where you harvest the valuable stuff from my broken computer parts and give me store credit for bringing it to you. I guarantee you'd net a profit.

EB Games here in Australia (A division of Gamestop) has been doing this for months now. Don't recall seeing them actually selling iDevices, though, so still amystery as to what they're doing with them.

As with video games you'd be much better selling them online to people who actually want them, and not a company wanting to make money off them!

I think i've seen an EB Games selling used iPod Touches, but I can't remember for sure. I'll have to check next time i'm there.

Considering how big their margin is on trade in games, what jackass will actually go in there and do this??? Ridiculous.

No, they're going to reverse engineer them to find out how apple sells so much stuff. and find the secret ingredient for a krabby patty. and to make something that will make them money.

Maybe one of those $.99 ones on the PS2. You know, one of the ones where the readable surface of the disc is 80% scratch marks, 15% Cheetos dust, 3% spunk and the rest of the space is occupied by all the fuck Gamestop gave.

I actually was given an iPod touch by my GF, her old one. It's old enough for me to be unable to get any apps for it so it's on the desk gathering dust while I sit here listening to my Zune. I still wouldn't give it to gamestop though as I think it would make a better Frisbee.
