911 = police?

When I went to Escapism UK, travel sites made sure I knew the emergency number was 999 (I think) and not 911, but it's not like my phone worked there, anyways.

Maybe it would've helped if I ever saw one while I was there. Besides, other people had their phones, so I was more focused on watching people.

I doubt I'd have understood the operator, anyways, if she sounded anything like the sandwich lady I ordered from who had to hold up the bowl before I could figure out that she was saying "butter."

I'm pretty sure 911 is the emergency number in Canada as well as the US.

A quick fact.

If you have a mobile (cell) phone and you go to another country, you will not need to remember what the number of that country is because if you dial your own emergency number it will automatically redirect you.

Well, I'm in England. We have 999, because accidentally calling emergency services by leaning on your phone (btw, you can call emergency services without unlocking the keys) is so funny.

Actually, that's not entirely the reason. Having 911 redirect allows tourists to ring the emergency services, which is a good reason...dunno if 999 redirects to that as well.

However, they used to have a different number for mobiles, apparently, and not many people knew that. I knew a girl that had to ring up directory support to find out what the number was, and they hung up on her, thinking she was crazy or something.

It's 000 now, though.

No. Here in Israel it's 100, I was taught that when I was in kindergarten, long before I could speak English not to mention watch any American shows.

000 here in Australia. Pretty easy to remember, but I wouldn't be too surprised if people got it confused with 911 when under pressure. Most of our entertainment here is American, and when you constantly associate emergencies with someone yelling "Call 911!" it could get confusing.

It's 112 in The Netherlands too.

Nope, I've never made this mistake, when I was alot younger, there was/had just been a change to the emergency number from 000 to 112, (because alot of children would press 000 for fun) so alot of effort was put into teaching everyone that 112 was the danish emergency number.

I only found out 12 years later that if you need the police directly, it's 114.

111 here in New Zealand, but I know 911 and 000 redirect to it. I think 112 and 912 do as well.

I thought all european people knew, since 2002ish 112 is used in Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Republic of Macedonia, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Ukraine and the United Kingdom in addition to their other emergency numbers.

In the Netherlands its 112, but it used to be this big number. I remember there being a commercial back in the day to tell us it's now something different.

Actually here in Germany the general emergency number is 112, but the direct line for the police is 110. 112 is primarily for Fire/ Medical emergency

I'm from Israel, and I'm pretty sure everyone here knows the number for police is 100... Hell, I'm sure a lot of people here aren't even aware of 911's existance.
