I've learned a few things from this thread. For one thing, apparently asking "quick, what's the number for 911?" can actually be a valid question if you're from the US and you have an emergency while out of the country. Second, a lot of countries have direct three digit numbers to get to individual emergency services, on top of the general line. In the US, your options are to dial 911 or, if it's not an emergency, look up the direct non-emergency line for the local police station (or fire station, or hospital) and dial all 7 digits. Finally, I find the Australian emergency number kind of interesting, because on a lot of American phone systems, 00 gets you the operator. I wonder how many American tourists in Australia call emergency services while trying to contact an operator every year...
