I'm working on a comparison video for the two Bayonetta games and I've been looking at the plot of the first game. The plot is fairly convoluted but there's something that doesn't make sense to me: Luka's father, Antonio.

Bayonetta was sealed away for 500 years until Antonio found and released her from the lake. Luka follows Bayonetta because he thinks she killed his father when he (Antonio) released her. During the game you meet Cereza who thinks Bayonetta is her mother only it is actually a young Bayonetta before she was sealed away. Cereza was sent to the future by Balder so she (Bayonetta) would regain her lost memories and awaken as the Left Eye so Balder can free Jubileus. Near the end of the game, Bayonetta sends Cereza back to her own time and, due to certain events of the game, it affects the future. Cereza was not sealed away for 500 years which gives Bayonetta her memries back and awakens her as the Left Eye as Balder intended.

NOW, the thing that is confusing me is why is Antonio still dead? If Cereza was not sealed away she would not have been found by Antonio and he would not have been killed by angels under Balder's orders.

I have looked into it and my understanding of the above events seems to be correct but nothing explains why Antonio remains dead. Anyone got any answers or theories?

WELCOME TO TIME TRAVEL

Even worse, it's a time travel plot in a game that doesn't really care about it's plot. The plot is mainly a framework for big spectacular set pieces than to make any sort of sense.

Edt: I love Bayonetta but I HATE time travel. I can't think of any plot that involves time travel that has no holes in it.

I don't think Bayonetta did anything to chance the past actually, she just saved the present in the first game. Its been a while but didn't she have her memory back because she started to remember things during her travels?

I'm not 100%, but I don't think she prevents being sealed away for 500 years. I'm not very solid on the story of Bayonetta 1 anyways.
I wouldn't put it past Platinum to accidentally leave a plot hole like that though...

A quick mention of Bayonetta 2:
Bayonetta 2's ending leaves a slightly more glaring plot hole that Platinum Games seems to have forgotten.

The Bayonetta wiki states: 'the Umbran Watch Cereza wears around her neck, her 'treasure' that Bayonetta tells her to keep close to her heart, keeps Jeanne from sealing her away'. They may have got it wrong or, as you say, Platinum didn't think of it and left it the way it is.

As for Bayonetta 2:
I'm assuming you mean Balder. As he absorbed Aesir he was gradually corrupted by him and Aesir said he would be back in to to when the Eyes were not destroyred and try again, the bit at the end is the precurser for the firt game. What Balder did in the first game was due to Aesir's corruption, not his own doing. Was that what you meant or was it something else?

If you remember, At the end of the fight with Aesir, Loki destroyed both the left and right eye so that Aesir lost his powers. Balder and Bayonetta lost the eyes to Aesir anyways, but with them being destroyed, they can't get them back.
If the Balder from Bayonetta 2 became the villain to Bayonetta 1, then he shouldn't have the Right Eye which was so critical his plans. It's not like he could have stolen it from an earlier version of himself, or else he wouldn't have had the Eye for Bayonetta 2.

A wizard did it.
It might as well be.
Whatever gave you the impression that Bayonetta cares about plot?

I see where you're coming from. Loki destroyed the eyes so when Balder went back in after absorbing Aesir he wouldn't suddenly become the eye again which means he wouldn't have the ability for the events of the first game. Well spotted...might have to mention that in the video I'm making as well!
