This is, as the title suggests, more of a warning then anything else but here goes.

I recently Bought a $1500 computer from a company called Cyber Power PC now I was looking for a while and I like their customization options the best and the were relativity close to me so shipping wasn't going to be a huge problem. so I ordered it and eventually it arrived, however when I received it the motherboard was broken and the on-board sound card was popping and croaking so I called them and after 10 minutes of the usual tech support BS they emailed me a shipping label and told me to use the box it came in (which luckily I hadn't broken down yet) and then because if the idiots who work in shipping it bounced around for 4 days and then cam,e back to me instead of going to the intended location (not necessarily their fault but I blame them for using 50 labels on the original box), then when I finally got it back to them I found out it would be 7 business days for them to repair it (note: it took them 5 to build the whole thing) and now today I got it back and the hard drive was not mounted and a few of the metal prongs are bent and unsuitable as well as one of my expansion bay covers is missing. after calling and leaving the call back message that is supposed to save your place in line, they didn't call me back so I called again 2 hours later, and after sending pictures to the tech guy I found out that I have to pay to ship them the broken hard drive before they will ship me a new one ( which is messed up) or I can make a $75 insurance deposit and they will send me a new one first.

So the point is I urge you my fellow escapists DO NOT BUY ANYTHING FROM CYBER POWER PC they are terribly slow they don't take responsibility for their mistakes and they will break things they are not even supposed to be working with.

Also I was told that the system was being tested during the fix as well and I dont think you can actually test a computer with out a hard drive very well now can you?

for discussion purposes: what terrible experiences have you had with a retailer? or what companies do you have a cautionary tale for?

Not exactly a retailer, but my driving instructor back in the day was very flaky, took months to get the lessons scheduled and then he'd fail you on your first test just so you'd have to pay an extra $50 for the retest.

And then you'd have to schedule the retest as well.

My test failed because he decided he'd test me during a snowstorm in a car with a broken heater, he'd lean forward to wipe down the windshield to keep it from being foggy and then they accused me of blowing past a stop sign when the car went about 5 inches past the stop line on an icy street.

It took about 7 months to get the test scheduled because he wouldn't answer, I finally just sat down during lunch at school and called him and hung up for about 10 minutes until he picked up.

Got my license that weekend and then he got involved in some scandal and got arrested. laughed.
