It's not a horror movie at all. It was nowhere near as scary as the first Alien - and while there were some pretty jumpy moments it wasn't what I'd call a horror film.

Sure it is. :]
Monsters, mutilation, blood, death, dark corridors and the atmosphere of fear. You may not be scared by that, but aren't those quite obvious elements of space-horror story ?

If we were to define a genre based on personal impression then i would say that horror died in late 80's. ;p

The only scene in the movie that really distrubed me, was the "alleged" biology professor who kept trying to stick his hand into that tentacle worm thing... even after it went all hooded cobra stance on him... The sheer level of stupidity... over 9000.

I guess it was the chest burster scene (which hadn't been spoiled at that point) , I mean the one of the actors fainted after filming that!

Well due to the horrific plot holes I wasn't really immersed so that scene made me facepalm more then anything, it was just such a bad setup.
First it's the whole super high tech automated operating table, but wait there is a whole gender missing in it's database... right, then the woman shoots up on painkillers like 5 times and the robot table gives her extra anesthetics and she still screams her lungs out... boy those future painkillers got crappy, and the super high tech operating table cuts her open and pulls out the squid with a fucking crane... sorry but was this table programmed for humans or a scrap yard, and what possible combination of that DNA could spawn a fucking squid, and if she is so afraid of it why does the just idly wait in there holding an enormous needle, and later on she is hardly even upset that they all left her to die, doesn't even mention it to people who don't know...

I really wish they spent some of that massive CG budget on half decent writers.

Which reminds me that a friend got out of a not-relationship(I think he was considering the possibility in the future) just earlier today because he made the girl, who was kind of stalkerish, jealous by casual mentions of other females. I think it was definitely for the best if that managed to end it -__-

Awww. It's kind of sad that she got that jealous, lol. I always feel bad for the women in failed relationships, even when it's their fault. I guess I'm a sucker for cute girls >_> I asked a friend out on the rebound and he rejected me. Who gets rejected on the rebound??

Also, her instant recovery with only occaisional bouts of pain is total bullshit. You're not walking at all for a couple of days after you get your stomach muscles sliced.

Personally the part that got me was how spry she was considering she just had her stomach operated on: she's running about for quite a while afterwards as if I didn't happen and even bangs her stomach after a large jumping fall and then just climbs up without even holding her side.

I mean, occasionally brushing your stomach as if you have a stitch doesn't show the pain of surgery in a very realistic fashion.

As for the teen having a seizure - apparently there were reports of people literally throwing up in the ailses during the screening of Alien back in 1979, so Ridley Scott seems to have a track record of disturbing his audience when it comes to horror films.

One of the reasons why I enjoyed Prometheus (and the original Alien for that matter too) is that it was disturbing and seemed to work as much at a subconscious level as it did at an in-your-face gore kind of level.

Back in the early days of films, one cinema showed a film that contained a shot of a train passing through a station. The camera had been placed quite close to the edge of the platform, which meant that the train was almost travelling directly towards it. When that piece of footage first ran on the big cinema screen, people literally climbed over the backs of their seats to escape.

A piece of black-and-white footage with no sound of a train not quite coming towards the screen was enough to cause panic in a cinema.

People have got more used to cinema over time. These days, we're far more used to separating what we see on a screen from reality, which makes us harder to scare or shock. I can completely believe that when the first Alien came out in 1979, the majority of the audience had never seen anything like it before.

I thought it was fine. As the creepy robot dude said "Remarkable survival instinct."
But seriously, stop being so uptight, world. I'd have wanted that thing out of me by any means as well and I actually thought it was a clever, original scene.
Why exactly do you think the dialogue/plot was so poor? I thought it was a really clever but not in your face about it kinda movie. It let you think about what was going on and I had a very long conversation about the movie with my friend after seeing it, trying to fit the pieces of the puzzle it gave you together. Are you even a fan of the Alien franchise? This entire movie was pretty much meant for fans to enjoy and speculate over.
I feel bad for the poor teen that had a seizure from it, but anyone that has seen an Alien movie before should know to expect lots of flashing lights.
Overall, the best thriller movie I've seen in years. And probably the best movie to do with alien life since District 9. When you think about that OTHER movie with aliens in it that shouldn't need to exist, I think we got it pretty good.

It's nice to see someone else thinking along these lines. A lot of people seem annoyed that the movie doesn't just flat out say "HERE! THIS IS WHAT'S GOING ON!" but I loved that I had something to talk with my friend about for days as we put the pieces together and talked about the different things we were shown and what it all means.

I doubt many people actually found Alien scary, just as most people wouldn't be scared by an autopsy. They might feel uncomfortable or tense, but your average person isn't going to actually be scared. American cinema has really warped what people consider to be genuine fear. I mean, look at your average "horror" made in the U.S. All it does is startle from time to time and anything can startle you, and use over the top gore to try and gross you out.

The Japanese and French - now they can make a horror film.
