Hello ladies and gents...we're gonna attempt to make a game today. Yeah I know...how original. Have patience...all will be revealed in due time.

Obviously the game will not be real...we're not developers. It will be hypothetical.

We're specifically gonna focus on two aspects: story (narrative and plot) and gameplay (mechanics).

This is where the challenge comes in: a list of things you are not allowed to use.

-no shooters (FPS/ TPS)...in fact no GUNS of any kind allowed
-no sandbox mechanics
-no custom characters
-no amnesiac protagonists
-no two tone morality of any kind...especially not one represented by bars (that is: if you wish to include a morality system...i.e. optional)
-no instakill cutscene QTE's...better yet...no QTE's at all.
-no silent protagonists
-no blatantly evil antagonists of the "they wear black/ look funny therefore they are evil" variety or the oversimplified "they are dominant/ aggressive/ oppressive" variety.

To further add to the challenge..you must:

-make the game highly immersive
-make the game highly replayable

How you do that is up to you. Continue reading only if you want to challenge yourself even further.

Very optional:

-a female protagonist or a child protagonist
-no apocalypse/ end of the world scenario's
-no "chosen one" and no "prophecies"
-no ancient/ dormant evil that has awakened/ been released.

Very very optional:

-no PHYSICAL killing (i.e. the affliction of wounds/ damage to the flesh/ matter that cause death/ destruction)
-no saving, rescuing, protecting or defending of anything or anyone as the MAIN plot

Ultimate:

-no killing of any kind whatsoever

Ow and screw the multiplayer...this is a singleplayer game only.

Why all of this? Cuz it's a healthy exercise...consider it a form of brain training.

I'm excited to see what you guys & gals will come up with.

EDIT: people...the point is to make up something of your own...not pointing at/ describing/ remaking existing games.

My game revolves around the story of a child. He's having a dream where he raises an Army of Toys to liberate himself from his Parents, who he deems as oppressive. Though it is obvious to the player that the parents are just being good parents.

The gameplay kicks in as you fight in various household locations against both the forces of you parents and your older brother. Your moms army is made up of Household items, you're brothers is teenager crap like CDS and Cigarettes, and your father's are Office supplies.

The turn is that instead of your army killing the other, it must face off in a series of minigames like Mario Party ones. Therefore the mission selection is wide and diverse, as well as immersive. Defeating a set of 5 minigames against an opponent gives you control of their army. And these armies have different skill features.

The childs army is average and is good at everything, the mothers is good for quickness related agility games, the brothers is good for deception related minigames, and the fathers is good against power related mingames.

Yes...well done :). I never implied the challenge was completely insurmountable though. Perhaps it was the whole "optional this and very optional that" thing that suggested it?

I'm ripping off Flower.

Hey, the wind isn't silent! You can hear it blowing!

Or I just make a Street-Fighter-esque game.

Of course, I could go the "artsy" way and create a game where you walk through different landscapes, interacting with other people. For every new place you enter, a different part of society is perverted. In one place, it might be sex that is so overblown that people are banging in the streets. In another, it might be ear infection.

It's a point-and-click adventure game! You go around and complete objectives in strange locations.

I don't really know a good main story line though... Probably something along the lines of some kid wanting to find the perfect fishing place.

But it covers all the optional tags.

Except the female protagonist, but that could be fixed by choosing the gender at the start. Or simply having a girl baby as the lead.

How about a game where you play as a dead person in a mythological underworld trying to free yourself?

The game itself would be based around exploration and trying to convince other dead people to help you. To succed in this you travel around a cave-like labyrinth filled with not only dead people but everything that's dies. So you encounter a library filled with all the books or carvings that have had every copy destroyed, a temple to every god that people no longer worship, cities containing building that are ruins and populated by dead civilisations ruled over using forgotton philosophies.

The basic gameplay would be similar to say Planescape where most of the game is dialog with NPCs. Where you go and who you interact with could be different on different playthroughs.

The game would have two basic endings, one where you reincarnate yourself and return to life. And one where you utterly destroy yourself accepting true oblivion.

Yes, you are absolutely right. You have proven that if you put your mind to it...the challenge isn't as hard as it perhaps seems at first. Now... You want a medal? :) Or do you prefer a statue? Bronze or marble?

Or are you waiting for the achievement icon to pop up on your screen? ;)

You play a woman, first seen in the Roman ages, who is about to be stoned to death by the lawgivers of the time.

Thankfully, History Man arrives and uses his sci-fi hourglass tool to rescue her! Problem, is half way through the rescue, he drops both the hourglass tool and the woman.

She awakes in a dungeon, alone, bar for the tool, which she does not know how to use.

Through trial and error, she finds that the tool moves her forward and backwards through time. She uses this to move herself to a place either before or after the dungeon existed.

As she uses this tool, she finds herself constantly being hemmed in. As she travels through time on the same basic spot, she gradually extends the area she can move in, as well as collecting additional tools, and solving various time based puzzles.

The woman reaches a milestone when she extends her area far enough to discover wormholes - tunnels through time that will propel her ton unknown, but previously inaccessible timezones. She then finds clues left through time by HIstory Man, who is hurtling out of control through time and needs her help.

The woman then uses all the tools and techniques she learnt in the first part of the game to track down and rescue History Man, who can then take the hourglass tool back.

The joy of this game would be in the replay value, as the puzzles would have multiple solutions, and the different timezones would be fun to explore.

How's that?

Excuse me while I mention what could possibly be one of the best games ever:
A game based on Firefly/Serenity from River's point of view.

The antagonists aren't evil, they just want to have order and peace.
Is that so bad?

Immersion: It's the Firefly universe, could you find a way to not be immersed?
Replayability: See above, replace be immersed with want to replay it.

You have all except the very very optional of "saving" people, because you wouldn't have to kill people, and I would assume the crew would need a hand every once in a while.
