LoTRO went free to play recently, you could try that out. I don't think I need arguements for an MMO if you've played WoW, they reward you for putting time in, and have almost limitless re-play value. Apart from that, I'd argue Oblivion GOTY on PC, there's plenty of mods to keep you interested and a full blown expansion pack that's supposed to be really good. Although if you'd prefer Fallout I'd suggest that. I personally hate the combat in F3 but adore Oblivion's clusterfuck melee combat.
So there is a GOTY of Oblivion?

G'damn, haven't searched the shops well enough then! Prefer some Melee clusterfucks. I have played neither F3 or Dragon Age and seen scraps of Oblivion. So I do not prefer any game at this point. Still reading into them all. Maybe you can enlighten me?
oblivion has a game of the year edition, but it only includes knights of the nine and shimmering isle.. there are about 10 smaller DLC packs that aren't included
Okay, thanks for the headsup. The smaller DLc, does it include anything Worthwhile? As in: "Must haves" or "Lets commit you to some more random quests without meaning to bind you to the product longer"?

I'm kinda in the same pickle as you OP.
Like many people have said before me, Fallout 3 GOTY (or any of Bethesda's games for that matter) is looking very tempting, but there is a rumor of Dragon Age Origins: Ultimate Edition coming out with the game and all of its DLC for $60 sometime in october.

As said before, Fallout 3 GOTY is a must buy. Though many here didn't like it, I wasted endless hours on Red Dead Redemption without even going online. If you are into building maps and the like, you could do a lot worse than getting Halo Reach purely for Forge.

Definitely the Oblivion GOTY edition. It's cheap, 28 bucks for the XBOX 360, if you get it used. Although the main quest line is not that good, the guild quests more than make of up for it. Lot's of stuff to do. Lot's of exploration. I've made multiple characters and discovered new places and quests each time. I've easily spent 100 hours playing this game. It's an essential buy for any RPG fan.

Not must haves, but depending on the character you may want them. They include thing like the Evil Lair and Mages Tower for assassins/thieves and mages. There is also spells, weapons and horse armor all for download. Whatever class you pick, I would recommended getting that DLC. Very few that are actually quest oriented, but Mehrunes(spelling?) Razor is a rather long quest with a great reward.

for the most part no, although one of them contains a non-mage's guild altar of enchanting and spellcrafting, so you can make items and spells without joining the mage's guild (normally you need to join it)

If you go for the PC version, Fallout 3 and Oblivion have ridiculous modding communities, so you can get years and years of gaming out of them

You are serious?!

That sounds awesome, and is hence added to my consideration list. I would award you with some cookies, but I ran out sadly. Thank you kindly.

Hmm, The DLC, is it endgame stuff? If so, creating items and spells at end game? Isn't that a bit useless? Or is the content accesible halfway the game to make the crafting system worthwhile?

Modding sounds neat. Might check out some mods. See if there's anything I fancy. If they have, then i'll add them to the PC consideration list.

But take my advice, seriously. You won't be disappointed.
I'll take it in consideration. Though the "walkthrough" part scares me a little. I like some difficulty, but not one that forces me to look for help in guides and walkthrough. If it's that punishing for not going through the same build/attack routine then it's not my game.

I'll check in the stores if I can find a copy. Does it still work with Windows 7?

Oh, no no no. Like I said ,there are many different strategies for beating the game, as evidenced by the fact that most walkthroughs instruct you to build different ships, or use different tactics in certain missions. And all of them work (though, naturally, some are easier than others). And I was young and terrible at gaming (like I still am) when I went looking for a walkthrough - I'm sure there are plenty who have done without.

I have it on Windows 7 and it runs fine. Hell, it's so old now, not only does it not need a graphics card to run, too good a graphics card will do bad things to it (I have a friend who has it installed on his gaming machine, and he has to have it in window mode to avoid the framerate attempting and failing to double, resulting in an unfortunate mess. I'm sure you could just google the problem if you get it find out how to convert it from fullscreen into a window, but if you like I could talk to the friend and get back to you on how he made it work).

Though it's been said many times already on this thread, Fallout 3: Game of Year Edition for Xbox 360 is what I must go with. The game is massive, immersive and will have you addicted for 80+ hours. V.A.T.S is awesomely fun to use, the perks are always interesting and you get to meet the most hilariously amusing characters against the backdrop of a dark and tough world.

PS: I don't work for Bethesda! *looks around furtively*

EDIT
Anything by Bethesda is a good bet, too, Oblivion wasn't as long though... (At least it didn't feel as long...)
125 hours. Didn't even have 100% completion. That fits my definition of long.

OT: I agree with this guy, bethesda is fantastic so if you pick up TES Morrowind/Oblivion or Fallout three you'll be golden. Both have GOTY Editions too.

I noticed you approve of Civilisation 5.

In that spirit I recommend Alpha Centauri. It is a spiritual sequel to one of the Civilisation games. It is Civilisation in space and it is excellent!

NetHack, it's a free, single player rougelike, and it's insanely time consuming, complex and challenging. (However if graphics or a good story are your thing you might wish to look someplace else)
