This is my very first review (whahoo!)

description and story

The Darknes is a fps about the mafia and demons which is developed by 2K games and that I found in a bargin bin. The story follows Jackie, a hitman for his uncles mafia group, who starts the game on his birthday. After your idiot of a driver crashes your car in a construction site where you somehow survive the crash ,pick up a gun and run around shooting workers and learning the controls. Eventually you find a room with a video tape of your uncle bitching about taking care of you and said there was a prestent in the closet. Expecting cake, I ran to the closet immediately, only to fing a bomb. After having the bugger blow up in my face I got some sweet demon powers and set off to kill my uncle.

gameplay and controls

The controles in this game are quite like you will find in most Xbox fps's so I'm not realy going to talk about it. Now on to the most important part, the gameplay. The game play is decent but flawed at certain bits. For exemple, to power your darkness demon abilities you have to make sure there is no light at all which not only tells enemies you're there if they hear you shooting out lights, but makes it impossible to see anything ( the browness of next gen doesent help either). Another flaw is that you walk evrywhere realy slowly. It's like you're in permanent bullet time. An upside to the gameplay is the darkness powers which are kinda cool. The powers vary from stealth attack tentacles, to stabby tentacles to giant blackhole bombs. The domn side is that after getting a blackhole bomb it's just too easy.

In cunclusion, I wouldent callthis a good game like in some reveiws that I read for it (not on this site) but a adequate game at best. On the other hand, you do get the bang for your buck, but only if you get it in a bin like me

blah

It started out nice, you had some spelling mistakes, but it was readable. It flowed nice, but it was too short and like The Necroswanson said, not very informative. Still, this si your first review and in time...well, practice makes near-perfect (nothing is perfect, nothing! except...you know...good bacon)

Pretty good for your first but i would elaborate, the best reviews are almost 2 pages long and help people understand and make an opinion on the game, but good for your first

I personally think this game was massively underrated. It was a lot of fun from start to finish! and some of the moments where jaw droopingly good. The ending was made only better by the fact Tomahawk (mike pattons rock outfit) played us out!

As a review, this needs work. Theres potential here, and I was told about as much as I really needed to know, with a decent description of gameplay, breif blurb for the plot and an overall conclusion about its worth, but I think you could improve by expanding it a little bit (maybe add two or three paragraphs of length) and tightening up the spelling. Most people aren't Nazis when it comes to things like spelling and grammar, so little slip ups will be forgiven, but there are just a few too many in here for you to get away with it, I think.

The 6 things that every review needs to cover:

Controls
Gameplay
Story
Graphics
Sound
Multiplayer (if needed)

Granted, you did cover three of those, but you didn't give much information at all. Plus, you had some major grammar/spelling issues. I'd suggest typing it in a word processor to catch all the mistakes you made, and then check the word counter and try to have at least 1,000 words.

I would argue that reviews aren't meant to help readers form opinions of the game. They should develop their opinions on their own by playing it.

Reaperman is right that length isn't a problem. I've spent multiple days on some of my reviews to make them nice a thurough (not like writing them all day, but periodically over the course of days).

I'm going to c/p the review I wrote for my own bad self; note-some minor spoilers ahead. But I think I did a decent job of capturing the game, so maybe you can take some pointers from that.

I played the Darkness, and liked it.

Hm. Where do I go from here?

OK. It?s a FPS that has been occasionally loved and hated, and certainly mocked, and that?s all well and good, but I liked it and here?s why:

First, it had a pretty good story. Even though it took me two months of intermittent playing to get through, I could figure out and keep in mind what the overall plot was. Nothing revolutionary, but still solid. Coupled with this was some really good voice acting. They spent some money to get good people to take on the personalities in this game, and it pays off. I especially liked Mike Patton as the Darkness; his voice while clear, is blemished, rough and very disturbing.

Second; the gameplay was pretty solid. Controls were easy, doing things was kept fairly intuitive, and the number of powers that don?t do anything for you vs ones that do is pretty good (2 of 8). Plus, it?s fun eating the hearts of your enemies. Never got tired of it. I realize this may say more about me than anything else, but what the hell. I?m also the same guy who has yet to tire of picking pockets in the Sly Cooper series, so obviously I have a malevolent streak that should probably be medicated.

The game was pretty good about giving me scenes where I could just run in and blaze away (always fun) or had to step back a little and try and approach things more tactically. The enemies weren?t utterly stupid, and the amount of time I had to spend trying to figure out ?what next? was kept to a minimum. The visuals were good, especially when dealing with NPCs who would give you min-games, but more on the mini games in a minute.

One thing I didn?t like about the game was the interface: figuring out your health, or how much ammo you had at any given time wasn?t all that clear. There would be times when I found myself firing an empty gun b/c I didn?t know that the left pistol was running out of bullets. Gauging my health was a bit easier-the screen would go red-but, as a personal preference I like to know really explicitly what condition I?m in.

One real plus about The Darkness was the selection of mini-games and collectibles. These things never felt forced; rather they were ?events? you could choose to do or not do. If you did them, you?d get a scrap of paper to call a phone number on, and while that did occasionally get tedious, you could listen to a creepy/funny/both message on the phone, or just skip the cutscene entirely, expediting your progress. The bonuses were the kind of thing I expected (video clips on the making of, project art) and some I didn?t (entire comic books in digital form), but most importantly: they didn?t feel like random shit. They were well integrated into the world I was playing in, and even served to enhance it, from talking to old ladies who wanted to see if you could dodge trains, to other gangsters who wanted you to take care of a neighborhood problem for them.

I?m a bit torn on the ending. While it was visceral and fun, the developers took some of the action out of the hands of the player, and that?s pretty much always a no-no. When they did put me back in the action, I was given this storytelling moment that seemed to offer a choice I was hoping I could get out of it-and I couldn?t. This makes sense from a storytelling aspect, (you?re on a vengeance quest throughout the entire game) and makes for a reasonably satisfying ending (as well as the possibility for a glorious sequel) but I couldn?t help but think that it needed to be executed better.

Nonetheless; my overall opinion of the game is quite positive.

you missed out mentioning the best part of the game Mike Patton as the voice of the darkness, him being the voice of the darkness was just great

there's a ton of great achievements/unlockables depending on the version you have too, not a great game but if you find it in the bargain bin, where it probly is now (i got it for $20 for the ps3), it is a good score and well worth the price at that point
