So the "console war" has been going on for quite a long time now with the 3 big names but I've had this horrid idea pop into my head. With the next gen consoles to be probably unveiled this year or next what's really stopping a company such as Electronic Arts from stepping into the ring. Now before you throw your arms up and call me a retard I remind you that although they've lost quite a bit EA are still very rich and powerful. They have "experience" with different game genres and money to back it up, what is stopping them from making their own machine and competing?!

It would put them in a great positions as they produce many exclusive games which instead of being on consoles we love would be on their system. Sure educated gamers and DRM haters would rather burn it but just think how many people would buy their console to play the new FIFA?

I know its just a scary nightmare but bloody hell it may just happen. What do you crazy lot think?

Given the number of popular IP's EA possesses, they could probably make a decent go of it. The problem might simply be an issue of cost of development and production. Keep in mind, two of the three console manufacturers are losing money on the consoles themselves.

The Wii is the one making money it cost them $158.30 to make and sell for $249.99 that's a profit $91.69 before controller & advertising.

EA has become a publishing/development behemoth, it wouldn't be a wise business move on their part to enter to console market, especially not with current economic condition, I'd imagine they'd be more content (and profitable) to remain flexible as they are now, having free range to publish software for multiple consoles as opposed to restricting themselves to their own hardware, and as much as they love draconian DRM schemes it still wouldn't make much sense in a cost VS profit analysis

I wish Sega had never dropped out of console development. They had some excellent systems and franchises to back them up. If they got their act together and had the financial capabilities and fan support, I think they could get back into the console market as a major contender. They just need to get back to their oldschool mentality.

If anything would put me off of console gaming for good, something like that would probably be it.
