So the whole "used vs. new" thing has been going on for a long time now.
And while we've had a whole lot of arguments from both sides, there's one that I feel hasn't been given much press which I would like to point out to everyone.
So we've all heard the "buy new" crowd yammering on about how when you buy used zero dollars from the sale go to the developer, which means that the people who made that game aren't getting any scratch from the product they made. Okay fair enough, but what if there's a situation where we don't want the devs to have any of our money?
Hear me out.
Say a developer makes this amazing, beautifully designed, great game, but the publisher or developer did something to piss you off. You want to play their game, but you don't want those slime balls getting any of YOUR money! Solution: you buy the game used, you get the game you wanted for cheaper, and the devs don't make a cent off you, you can have your cake AND eat it too.
Example: I'm a giant Mass Effect fan, I love the games, lovey love looooove them. And I am absolutely psyched for Mass Effect 3, buuuuuut I despise EA with every fiber of my being. I hate EA, hate them like the plague they are, they've done so much to hurt the industry in the last few years, and I will never allow one single dime of MY money going to those fat cats at EA again for as long as I live. I could refuse to buy ME3... but then I would be missing out on the closing chapter of my favorite game series of this console generation. But I don't have to miss out on it, I can just buy it used, the genetic wastes at EA don't get any money from my sale, and I get to play the finale of what might be our generation's Star Wars trilogy, I win both ways!
The model we have now with used and new games gives consumers the right to choose who gets their money and who doesn't without having to miss out on any games as a result. I suggest we all start doing it this way, lets buy the games from smaller developers who need that cash new, and buy the stuff from EA, Activision and all the other big publishers who don't need your support used.
No I don't care if I just made Ayn Rand cry by suggesting we intentionally hurt bigger companies because they make too much money, a little socialism is good for ya.
