A Different Take on Bioshock Infinite

So I pre-purchased Bioshock Infinite, started playing today, and realized right from the get go:

My video card is outdated.
On all the lowest settings and best fit to make it run smoothly, the game is stuttery and slow. However, I still really wanted to give this game a shot, so I pushed on ahead. The game can run smooth at times, but only briefly and albiet for a few seconds. Most of the time, I run about 5-15FPS at best.

At first I was annoyed, the I was less focused on the story and my surroundings and more on the fact I could hardly walk forward without slamming into a wall suddenly. Most, if not all, of my HUD is missing and the menus are completely black for me. I have to guess what I select when I launch the game and hope it is not New Game and overriding my previous save. When I pause in-game, I cannot view any of my selections to choose from. None of the pop-up videos appear on my screen, instead I am left staring at the inside of a viewing machine. And on one specific occasion:

This was during the escape scene with Elizabeth, once you hop on the Sky line. The winged creature tears through the sky and rubble crashes onto the bridge nearby, causing the line to snap. At the end of the line, a cutscene is supposed to kick in which you and Elizabeth fall into a floating beach. Instead, I must have phased through and just fell off the end of the line. I continued falling through the map, and out the other side.

After some time pushing ahead, I started formulating techniques to try to combat the lag spikes. Instead of looking forward at all the mist and polygons clogging my screen, I looked down or looked into a nearby corner. The less on my screen at once, the less lag I received. I found myself staring at mundane things that really had no importance to anything, yet due to my now diverted view, I was gazing at. It's here that I noticed the small details of the game.

And, if not by accident, I'd like to think I got a small advantage over regular players through this lag as well. I discovered that on the sky lines, without lag or slowdown the player would wiz through the air at rapid speed, but in my case I had enough time to think, to prepare my assault. It was almost as if Max Payne had lent Booker a few tips on bullet time. My sniper and rifle shots lined up more accurately due to this increased reaction time. Even though I do not fancy myself slow to pick up on things, I actually have come to appreciate the "longer" cut scenes, as the audio still works with the animations of the characters but since the animations are sluggish, the cut scene is dragged out like a soap-opera. I have more time to process what I am hearing (and barely seeing).

I've seen the video reviews, user commentary, and lurked discussions about this game. It's strange, really, but this slowdown has actually given me a completely different take on Bioshock Infinite.

Actually, you can slow yourself down until you come to a near-complete stop on the Skylines. =P

Well I didn't encounter any of those problems. Ran at about 30-70 fps on Very high, with a few dips down to 18 at some segments. I was boxed into a corner by Elizabeth a couple of times though, which was annoying.

I'm not sure if you know all of this stuff, but try these things:

Get gamebooster: http://www.iobit.com/gamebooster.html. Some people will tell you that it's useless but it certainly is not. Use it to defrag your HDD, or at least the Infinite folder itself. Run the optimizer on it, and check the temps on the bottom to see if anything is overheating. Launch the game using it so that Windows update, the print spooler, and other non-gaming shit gets shut off first.

Make sure you have the newest Nvidia or ATI driver, as they'll have much more optimization for Infinite's release.

Check out this guy's site: tweakguides.com . He may not have an Infinite guide set up yet, but at least you can check out a lot of the general Windows tips, as well as the configuration of your video card's driver utility.

I've eked out a whole lot of FPS this way, if you're feeling daring you can run the optimization guide for your BIOS and get the most out of that (short of overclocking). My $80 GTX 465 gets 35 FPS in Tomb Raider with everything but TressFX hair jacked up, so you could have more breathing room. Good luck, and I can't wait to play this damned game...just need the money first.

Did you just make lag seem like an improvised bullet time feature and a thing that improves game detail?

Lol, for a minute there I expected a hate thread, with tons of replies insulting you like no tomorrow.
Anyways: although I can see your point, I can't help but feel it'll still detract from the experience. Just things being so...slow and sluggish.

I agree, and I currently plan to finish my current experience with the game; then move on to find better hardware and/or clean this one up to get the full experience.

Yep. Falling through the map and seeing (literally) through all the mirrors and textures to the models on the other side is actually pretty interesting. The best way to explain it is, it's like the feeling of using the Action Replay on a Pokemon game and running out of the path. It's just neat to see what else is out there in the game world.

Even if you have a good card it will still stutter.

Its a known issue. Even with high end enthusiast cards being dragged down for an unknown reason, especially in transitions.

The recommended and minimum specs are practically lies, because for some odd reason Bioshock randomly acts like its stuck in quicksand. And made worse when you have to drop it all and restart. Losing all your progress because Bioshock doesn't have manual saves.
Oh. Well I guess I'm somewhat happy it's not just me, but my card probably doesn't help. I'm running an unmodified Dell Inspiron with all the vanilla pre-loaded hardware. Essentially my laptop is a glorified toaster. c:
