A DJ Hero 2 question

Ok, so I'm at one of the DJ battles with David Guetta on DJ Hero 2...and the game is making it literally impossible.

Whenever I come to one of the first few freestyle sample sections, the button on the screen just becomes a grey cross and I can't use them...so effectively, it's impossible to earn points here and I inevitably lose. Help?
