A game called Gladius

So, my main computer broke down and my lap top is not good enough to run most programs, so my friend gave me one of his old games. The game was called "Gladius" for the nintendo Game Cube and it looked pretty entertaining.
The premise of the game was that you train a school of gladiators of all sorts ranging from mundane to magic and fight in a Turn Based Strategy Game style to enter a high tournament and win the respect of the world. Long story short, it turned out to be one of the best games I've ever played.
However, I've yet to meet another person who has even heard of the game besides my friend, I just don't understand it. So I have to ask you guys: Have you played this game and do you agree with me (I truly think this might be my favorite console game of all time) or is something wrong with me? The worst part is that the game felt like it was set up to have a sequel, and I can't find a single reference to such a thing anywhere...

Yeah. I've heard of it. I had it on Xbox, but a friend stole it. I was greatly disappointed by the Turn Based Strategy aspect. I thought it was going to be a hack n slash.

I got it on the the ps2, its a pretty good game. I found it to be very entertaining. :)
A sequel would rock, there's not really a current gen game that is even remotely like it.

I kinda remember seeing something about it on an old game. It was a trailer in the Demos section old Xbox games used to have. Give me a bit of time, I'll remember which one...

Probably Armed and Dangerous...

Looked it up on Wiki,

Heard of it, and have it.
I've actually played it recently too.
Not one of the best games I've ever played, but definitely very good and underrated.

Love that game. I still own it for my gamecube. Best part about it was the four player co-op mode and the good times I had with friends. I really should go back and play all the way through and get all the secrets.

I've seen it for the PS2, but I've never played it. There is nothing wrong with enjoying a game that many have overlooked for one reason or another. Glad you're having fun!

Even if there's no direct sequel, check to see whether the developer and/or publisher have done anything else that might appeal to you. That sometimes works pretty well. You can also try the "other games you might like" lists that some of the big sites like Gamespot generate when you look up info on a certain game.

I remember that game. Damn good. Not amazing, but definitely entertaining, which is important.

You've perked my interest. I may pick it up in the future used somewhere (once I finish a few other games I have). Is there any dramatic difference between PS2 and Gamecube? I have both, I'm just asking.

It's good but the pacing is a bit too slow for me, reward wise I mean. It takes far too long to get to the real meat of the game.
I guess we may differ there. I considered every new arena a reward because it meant a change in scenery, new gear, and new gladiators.

Ah, back when lucasarts could release things that weren't over the top lightsaber fetish games. I'd love to see more games like Gladius, x-wing vs tie fighter, battlefront, Armed and Dangerous, Grim Fandango, and Republic Commandos which is still my favorite star wars game.

I liked my jedi and sith when they still had an element of mystery. Now I just pick and choose what canon I allow into my skull. As far as I'm concerned most of the stuff released in the last ten years never happened and all is well.

I guess, I just felt they didn't give enough of the more interesting units in a decent time frame. Granted I'm only maybe 5 or so hours into the game but that's because it's boring with similar units when all I want to do is toy with mages or something.
I'll give it that. Gladius was pretty much the exact opposite of instant gratificaiton. You need to get your s***s and giggles from the little bits of flavor that accompanies some of the unique characters. Watching the skeleten necromancer punch himself in the face to do his spells never got old for me.

I liked the game, it paces like tar but I enjoyed the ride.

I love Gladius, but two years ago I accidentally steped on it and I never bought another copy unfortunately. I really have to see if it can play on the 360.

Get it. Play it. Love it.

Gladius is a very good game. Not the greatest, the plot is predictable, the Voice acting (and writing) is pretty mediocre, and the ending is a little disappointing.

However, if you like the idea of recruiting and training a group of gladiators and like turn based, tactical combat it's a good way to spend a few hours. Or a dozen. I don't know about the Gamecube, but the Xbox version allows co-op so it's a nice way to play with another person if you want. My wife and I actually made it most of the way through the game together before losing interest. Course that was after I'd already beaten it.

Seriously, though. It's a decent game and you should give it a shot.

I had it around the same time as Shadow of Rome. It wasn't anything like SoR. but I can#t remember if it was the TBS game (which I have played) or another, similar game that was a bit more supernatural.

The name alone sounds reminicent, i probably saw it on sale or somthing back in the day when you could buy gamecube games from a retailer, can't honestly say ive played it though, turn based games always anoy me, largley because i have no patience for that sort of thing but more so because i find it realy stupid as a concept to quote yahtzee as best as i can remember:

"ive never seen a fight where two people stand on opposite ends of a room taking turns slapping each other in the face"

That pretty much sums up my feelings about the matter.
