A game design program please?

To be clear, I've searched for almost a year on and off for a program on the computer with which i can make a game of any graphical quality. For example, see yahtzees Trilby series. So please, a relatively amateur friendly preferably free game designing program for indie purposes. I'm getting sick of having a good idea that ends fruitlessly.

EDIT: the game i had in mind includes a controllable avatar.

I don't know if any of them will suit your purposes, but I'll recommend the 3 game-making programs I currently have on my laptop:

Game Maker (VERY basic)
RPG Maker VX (pretty in-depth, but still kinda basic)
and
Unreal Development Kit (very in-depth, and can create some kick-ass stuff)

game makers to simple, rpg maker broke sadly, and unreal is still downloading (1.6 bg... better be damn worth it)

Unity 3d is free for personal use, but I cant tell you much about it as I can't script for toffees.
