Most if not all games need to have scripting in them in some way or form, otherwise how else would it be possible to play the game for it's plot (except arcade games like tetris that don't need it or racing sims for examples), but I think its more prominent and therefore obstructive in linear games, for this reason one might say that Call of Duty games are quite heavily scripted and can be a turn off for some gamers who prefer more freedom, or God of War as another example.

But what to you is an example of a good scripted game? Was it more the likes of Skyrim? Which still had scripted AI actions but less obstructive? Or maybe you liked CoD's scripted moments because you thought they made CoD what it was as a series.

I actually think God of War, being a game that's all about spectacle and feeling like a badass, was the perfect time for scripted kills and cinematic encounters. Lazy critics like to say that cutscenes and scripted sequences are all bad all the time. In reality when used properly they can really enhance gameplay.

Most games need scripting. I've only seen the "too much scripting" critique applied to games that in my opinion fully deserve it.

Want a bad example?

Ace Combat Assault Horizon. FUCK. THAT. GAME. I refuse to accept it as part of my favorite franchise.

In Heavy Rain, pretty much the entire game was scripted. One may or may not appreciate that; but on the whole Heavy Rain was entertaining and successful, as demonstrated by some of the buzz for their newer projects.

Metal Gear Solid 2 went into some fourth wall/post-modern hypothetical philosophy on game scripting itself.
