While im sure its been said half a dozen times, Bulletstorm. Its possibly my favorite FPS of all time. That or S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Both are really great, and at this point in time, probably really cheap. Cant go wrong either way.

If you want single player, excellent stories, I recommend:

Deus Ex: Human Revolution
Bioshock
Deus Ex (the original game, quite old and "boxy" graphics, but excellent story)

Bioshock or the upcoming Bioshock: Infinite
Team Fortress2 (it's free!)
Rage (it's a so so game but the enemy AI is really good and the gunplay is fun)
I've heard good things about Metro 2033 but haven't played it yet.

Sanctum is pretty good. Poorly optimized for my computer but it blends tower defense and fps really nicely.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a good FPS game? It can be on any console or pc.
Any console?

GoldenEye 007 or Perfect Dark on the N64.
Those were great games. Used to play 4 player multi with my brother and neighbours back in the day. Good times.

So I've got a hankering to play an FPS game yet I don't want to play another bland military shooter.

If you have not played anything in the FEAR series, I can recommend the original and 2. The expansions to the first are OK, I don't know about the expansion to the second or anything about the third.

The first is tops, but the second is not all that bad. Maybe I was able to totally overlooking whatever shortcomings it may have had because I paid about three dollars for it during a Steam sale. As for the first, it was the first game I played with my first custom PC, so I may have overly fond memories of that as well.
I played the first and it was great. It had an amazing atmosphere throughout. I'll have to pick up the second next time I see a sale.

Halo and Crysis games are pretty good. The Fear games are also surprisingly fun.

If you don't mind some RPG stuff in the mix, then I'd recommend Borderlands or Deus Ex: Human Revolution.

Not a FPS, but a shooter. Spec Ops: The Line has mediocre gameplay, but the story is really gripping. I'd recommend it if you find it cheap.

Mechwarrior Online - Free to play. A bit buggy at the moment, but great fun if you like giant mechs with guns the size of trees. :D

Assuming we're talking relatively recent games:

There's Borderlands 2,
Tribes ascend (free to play!)
Planetside 2 (more free to play!)

And...Umm..That's all I got, really

Mass Effect
Unreal Tournament 2004
Deus Ex
Killing Floor
Cryostasis
Bioshock
Alpha Protocol
Spec Ops: the Line (military shooter, but the more you play it, the better it gets)

But my personal favorite is Condemned: Criminal Origins

Have you even looked before you posted?
Did you even read the OP before you posted? How exactly are Mass Effect or Alpha Protocol First Person Shooters.

Whats worse, the guys that made Black were the ones that made Bodycount, and because it sucked, the studio actually got shut down. So there goes any hope of a Good sequal...

Borderlands 2 is pretty good. I'd say "if you like Borderlands 1 you'll like this one" but I played the shit out of Borderlands 1 and Borderlands 2 lost its charm on me after a month of playing it as opposed to BL1's 3 years of gameplay. Oh well. A lot of my fellow BL1 Vets are bored of this game so I'm not alone.

Ignoring my experience, this game is still really great and you should get it.

Yes, because bland military shooters are the only FPS' that ever get made.

It's not like there's Tribes: Ascend,
Halo,
Resistance 1-3 (which edges a cut above by having unique and interesting weapons),
Half-Life,
Portal (less shooter and more puzzle, but still first-person and you're holding a gun),
Bulletstorm,
Crysis, Crysis Warhead and Crysis 2 (the latter two are the ones I'd recommend personally),
Hard Reset,
Deus Ex: Human Revolution,
Dishonored,
The Darkness and The Darkness II (the first has pretty ass controls and they're both kinda short, but still pretty unique and interesting stories),
Bioshock,
Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas,
Serious Sam,
Painkiller,
Borderlands and Borderlands 2 (the sequel is better in basically every way),
Team Fortress 2 (only multi-player really, but anyone who calls it a bland military shooter has never even seen promotional material for it),
Far Cry 3 (open world sandbox),
F.E.A.R. (the first had the best "horror", though the third has a pretty neat co-op mode),
Metro 2033,
Mirror's Edge (again, more parkour and platforming than shooting, but you're in first-person view and you get guns at points),
Singularity (a hodge-podge of a lot of better shooters, it never really takes advantage of its time-travel gimmick but it's not really a bad game),
The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena,
the entire S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series,
Condemned,
Prey,
Timesplitters,
XIII,
Star Wars: Republic Commando,
Call of Cthulu.
If this list looks abit daunting, I suggest skipping through to the part thats called Timesplitters. One of the best game series going and damn it I am a personal crusade to get the fourth one made!

My favorite FPS game to this date unmatched is Soldier of Fortune 2. Kind of old school for those who grew up in the 90's.

To this date it is the most detailed game ever, in sacrifice to graphics (which were still good) Raven Software. Concentrated on detail, in a extreme way that you will not find anywhere else, and for 2 examples:

1. You sneak up on a enemy and shoot him in the back of the head with a shotgun and his face matter paints the wall (without his head exploding).

2. in one mission there are a bunch of enemy soldiers in a office building looking for you, I threw 1 concussion grenade in the room and the blast turned all the glass in the shrapnel, all I heard was blood curling screams and I was laughing at awesomeness. Miss that game.
