DDO is fun and DFO is actually also pretty fun if you like the old side scroller beat 'em up type games.
Both of those are free (purchasable perks of course).
I don't play DFO often but I find it's an agreeable little time waster.

DDO is is really good and free. LotRO is going free this fall, and Everquest 2 is opening free servers next month. Let's see, Ragnarok Online also went free...

Dungeons and Dragons Online. Atlantica Online (you will like if you like Final Fantasy). They are the only good f2p mmorpg's. Also Have a look at Perfect World's games. Your comp may have trouble running them but for F2p they are quiet good quality. At the mo I am beta testing a game called Zentia online thats not half bad either. Haven't uninstaled yet anyway. As above posters say Lord of The Rings online and Everquest II are going F2p in the next few months. If none of the above take your fancy then thoes two bad boys should sort you out.

I actually got back into Runescape in the past month. It is SO much different now, graphically and otherwise. Anti-aliasing, greater detail, all that good stuff. They also added this brand new region called "Daemonheim" that is available to members and non-members. It's pretty much a randomizing dungeon that you can do with a team that gets progressively more difficult.
Probably the most fun I've had in Runescape since forever.

Especially helps with high smithy skills!

It's not out yet sadly but theres this. http://blackprophecy.com/ You might not be able to run it.
Combat Arms was fun back when I played it too, you should be able to run that, though some say the micro-transactions killed it.

Runescape was enjoyable, now it's not but easily the best free one, just pay for WoW if you want my opinion.

my two personal choices are Allods (pure and simple WoW clone is what I thought of it) and DDO like others have mentioned. DDO it is possible to get everything in the game for free, but it requires grinding multiple characters from basically 1-4 (2 character slots for f2p) or so to collect the points used in the online store (my current goal till i get a job and can buy some of the more useful parts).

If you played WoW, you have ruined all other MMOs for yourself, especially free ones . I can't recommend anything because I can't think of one better or even close to WoW.

Try DDO (dungeons and dragons online) it's free and pretty good
I've often wondered about that, I want to try it out.
When I last played, it was a great sidescrolling MMO that lets you play with 4 players in a dungeon with ~16-20 different variations of fighters. It's a pretty good game where you can decide to play a lot of PvP or PvE and not be bored. The maps randomize, you can decide how hard the enemies are and there are a LOT of drops which = a LOT of cash. Of course, you can decide to put money into the game if you want but that's an entirely different story.

Only problem I had was that I played when it first started so there were a LOT (a LOT) of gold farmers hawking merchandise. Hopefully it's better.

Since then, I've been playing Ragnarok Online.

If you're looking for 3D, I'd recommend Mabinogi or Silk Road.

Maplestory I didn't prefer but it's just not my kind of game...

I'm assuming you have a decent internet. Runescape? I don't like it but it passes the time.
You could also try the World Of Warcraft free trial.
It has a free version but to do anything it's $5 a month. I played that game back in the day(the relative day) and it had an awesome economy and fun pvp. Pretty sure they took all the good stuff out tho.

Ummm, DDO isn't side-scrolling at all. It's always been a full, 3d MMO. Unless you mean DFO, in which case, yeah, THAT is sidescrolling.

Guild Wars, it does a number of things better than WoW.

I have to agree with DDO, definatly kept my attention, only two other MMO's have, Guild Wars and FFXI I quite enjoy. Though DDO plays the best with the least lag for me. I also started when it went f2p, and now I have Monk/Fvs/Warforged and several adventure packs and characters slots, while staying (mostly) free to play.

Also, I got my wizard to level 20 and True Reincarnated him into an even better wizard XD.

It's "Murmorpuger".

OT: I'd try to check on Aeria games if anything excites you.
Ya my wife really likes their games. She plays Shai(sp?) and Grand Fantasia.

There's a couple to start out with, the first one especially. If you only play one, play the first. Everyone needs to play Cave Story at least once, and try to find the real final boss if you can.

I could find plenty more but I don't keep a list or links on hand.
