Agreed, but the mind-fuckery only starts towards the end.

Malfunctioning Colonel Campbell (A.I) quotes:

"An Anemone or Clematis plant's juice can cause a rash. When pruning them it's a good idea to wear gloves."

"I was a North American Fall Webworm in my past life. Those were the good old days..."

"Weapon Mode Socom Level 01 Destroy all targets to reach the goal! Number of targets: 3."

"Variety level 13: Rescue Meryl! The Return of Genola!"

"Kawanishi-Noseguchi, Kinunobibashi, Takiyama, Uguisunomori, Tsuzumigataki, Tada, Hirano, Ichinotorii, Uneno, Yamashita, Sasabe, Kofudai, Tokiwadai, Myoukenguchi."

The mind-fuckery doesn't stop.
You left out the best one: "I hear it's amazing when the famous purple stuffed worm in flap-jaw space with the tuning fork does a raw blink on Hari-kari rock. I need scissors! 61!"

and of course "TURN THE GAME CONSOLE OFF NOW, RAIDEN!"

Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem (GCN)
this. I had a lot of weird dreams from this game.
This is what I thought of when I saw this thread. Eternal Darkness's sanity effects were thoroughly hair raising, especially if you are a veteran of the horror genre. Sure, the undead, a storyline similar to that of Cthulhu Mythos, and a very impressive atmosphere are apparent, but what's really gonna fuck you up? A terrifyingly difficult boss battle with the bane of your existence (really, he is), or the monitor suddenly saying that your controller port is empty and that the controller has been yanked out during said battle. That or that your memory card is corrupt.

Either Eternal Darkness or most of the Silent Hill series. 'Nuff said.

Metal Gear...each one has a character or two that could do some mindfuckery. The best two for me being The Sorrow from MGS3 and Laughing Octopus from MGS4.

"Honestly though, you have played the game for a long time. Don't you have anything to do with your time?" - Campbell
Good to know kojima respects the fourth wall. It was quite the mind fuck.

POSTAL 2 EXPANSION I agree with
Also Call od Cthulu Dark corners of the earth was a very good mindfuck/horror (yes both)
I still have to try sanity's requiem
and Bioshock wasn't all that bad in comparison to some other things (the high detail water in it made all the blood and gore just look fake beyond belief)

If anybody's into anime rather than games I seriously recommend "Higurashi no naku koro ni" and "Elfen Lied" at the very least. There's others but if you don't like those 2 you might aswell just throw yourself off a cliff.

I remember when I first played MGS2 and I got to that bit, not knowing what was going to happen.
The first codec call I got from the Colonel was something along the lines of:
"You're not trying to cheat the game are you Raiden? Thats pretty low."
I don't remember the exact phrasing but it was along those lines.
Especially as I wasn't using cheats or anything, I wasn't sure whether the game thought I was cheating and that was the way it responded if you did or if it was supposed to be happening.
In an attempt to make sense of it I called back and got the one mentioned directly above.
I was actually thinking that maybe technology had chosen that exact moment to go crazy and revolt against mankind. Then I realised how stupid I was to think that.

The whole experience wasn't helped by the fact that I was playing when it was very late in semi-darkness, I was the only one awake and in those secitons the codec view is zoomed in on the colonels face.

But yes, that was a huge mindfuck.

Weird Dreams. Insanely hard game where you have gone into a coma on the operating table and just have to wake up.

The thing is...your nightmares are becoming real...and one touch from the Desert Fish, The Frozen Chicken, The Carnivorous Roses and dit...dit...deeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

Darkseed as well. Especially as it's based on H.R. Giger's art.

Wicked. Where you are the Forces of Light battling the Forces of Darkness across the Constellations with only the Tarot to help.

I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream.

Personal Nightmare, The HitchHikers Guide to the Galaxy, The Monty Python Game, Elvira 1/2, Waxworks...

Probably will think of more later.

s.t.a.l.k.e.r, the first one. this game was so scary that at one point i had to put off playing it for three days. also i could only play it during daytime. the immersion sucks you in like a black hole, then it crushes your spirit and rapes your mind.

in short, it takes balls to play this game, and even bigger ones to complete it.

lab x18 is the biggest mindfuck of them all. don't say i didn't warn you.
there's a huge reinforced door once you get down to the lower level, and you can see that there's something behind it that is powerful enough to almost bang the door open (and the door is fucking heavy, it takes 30 seconds or so for it to open fully). you, of course, have to enter. but before that, you have to find the access code for the door. so you look around and find it, go back, open the door and brace yourself for the nastiest thing you have ever seen.

except, it's not there. there's nothing. the room behind is empty, yet seconds before the door was still being hit. my mind shat itself right there. the mind fuckery was complete.

also, there's that adventure game that takes place on greenland... it's pretty freaky as well, especially considering you don't have a fucking weapon.
