Well, the thing is that I've been looking for a long time for a space shooter which is similar to Freelancer but with no success.
What's important to me, is that it's an open world. Some ship customizing is nice as well.
Thankful for any suggestions, since I've been looking for a game like this for a long time.
(Don't recommend EVE...allready tried that, but don't like the battlesystem at all.)

Have you tried the "X" series?
Here's an interesting new space sim/zombie game called S.P.A.Z. http://www.spacepiratesandzombies.com/
then you could try Black prophecy http://blackprophecy.com/, a MMO, not really open world though.

Evochron Mercenary isn't bad. Althought X3: Terran Revolution is my preference. I have sunk so many, many hours days weeks into it.

X Wing vs TIE Fighter / X Wing Alliance are great if it's the combat you're after. Vendetta Online is also worth a look if you can get over the FPS style combat.

Games I have played and can highly recommend:

Tachyon: The Fringe
Wing Commander III
Wing Commander IV
Starlancer
Freespace 2

If you want more of an open-ended space-trading game like Freelancer, I recommend Wing Commander Privateer as well, if you can take the graphics.

Also check out www.freeallegiance.org if you're into the multiplayer thing.

Darkstar One and Starshatter are good too, so I've heard. Never played though.

Because everyone's already said X v T, I'm going to say a lesser known one:
www.freeallegiance.org

As someone mentioned, its a multiplayer game. Totally unique, largely combat based but with bits of RTS in there for more advanced players (anyone CAN do it, they just won't understand how). Extremely team-orientated.

Ten years old now, but surprisingly doesn't really look it at all. I suppose there's only so good a space sims graphics can be beyond just good textures -- its not like they need any animations or anything.

Its also free, btw.

The best thing about FreeAllegiance seems to be that it should be able to run on my laptop. :D
I've been looking into some of the other games here, and I can't believe I haven't heard of the X series before...
