I have noticed a growing trend in videogames. I doesn't have any genre, I think. It just appears.
I first noticed it when I was playing Wolfenstein for the 360. You can go into this turquoise coloured sight thing called The Veil.

Then it came to me, I've seent his before!
Batman: Arkham Asylum's Detective Mode and Halo 3: ODST's VISR Mode.

Basically, this is about 'second sight' mechanics in games. Now, that's all I have been able to come up with. I can't be sure if there's others. If there are, please tell me.

Alternatively, I could just be paranoid. Who knows?
So, if there are any glaring omissions from my list, please tell me the game and what the second sight does or is.

Zombie Survival does it aswell, if you play as the zombies that is. Also Time manipulation and Cover systems were popular for a while.

Another one is that thing in the Ghostbusters video game.

So, a couple of new games have similar mechanics, let's not start shouting yet. We must wait, and see, it will pass, they always do.

It's been done before, take the AvP games did exploited this brilliantly.

The Predator had a vision mode for each of his prey and normal "human" vision. The Alien had a photo-negative style navigation mode and hunting mode. Whereas the Marine had normal human vision and Night Vision.

Ah, in Left 4 Dead?

Yeah, Wolfenstein has Time Manipulation, too. I think it was called Mire. It could also kill enemies by a sort of nuclear blast thingy.

L4D sort of does it as well, infected have washout-o-vision that shows the survivors positions at all times, whilst survivors get items and each other marked out as items of interest.

Also Metroid Prime's scan visor worked similarly.

It's just a very unsubtle way of giving players hints.

No, no. Not shouting. Just curious as too see whether I'm paranoid or not.

Like the Halo series, where the number 7 pops up everywhere.

Okay, not saying you were shouting, just throwing it out there.
Really? it shows up everywhere? Didn't realize that, is it just in the sequels or in the original as well?

Does it? How so? Enlighten me, please, I'm not being sarcastic, I really do want to know (honestly, no sarcasm).

Meh. I thought that each of those individual examples fit just fine into their respective games.

Unless you have some weird phobia of hitting a button and having the colors on your screen change. o_O

the original predator games....now that was a good game......

hmm, it seems a "second sight" is almost mandatory in all high tech or magical fps games. I remember in oblivion(though not strictly fps) i basically played the game through with night vision and life detect on 24/7. in left 4 dead, i remember trying to find any way to exploit the zombies vision, which i did. ahhh, i think all my fav games (excluding fighters) hve had second sight.....why do we even bother with normal vision, it sucks.

Tomb Raider: Legend had the RAD mode.
The Tron-like blue glow of manipulable objects in Thief: Deadly Shadows.
Samus' visor in any of the Prime games.
Jade's camera in Beyond Good & Evil.
The cameras in the Fatal Frame series.

Heck, there was even a 2nd vision mechanic in an old Simpsons game for the NES where Bart has to use a pair of 3D glasses to complete an objective.

New Trend? Hardly, but it may be getting more attention and better deployments in games given the advances in graphics.

It'd be really brave if the devs behind the next AvP game could make the Predator's default vision as it was in the original Predator films. The trouble with my idea though, is if people ended up having terrible eye strain through all that red. :)

Yes, I think it is finally gone, F.E.A.R was okay with its bullet time, but enough is enough

Yeah, the number 7 pops up everywhere in the Halo series.
There's seven Halo's.
343 Guilty Spark 3+4=7
2401 Peninet Tangent 2+4+0+1=7
Master Cheif is Spartan one-one-SEVEN.
There's dozens of them in the series, but I haven't found them all.
