The purpose is to find out people's general impression of artificial intelligence.

People?s impression of Artificial Intelligence and Advanced Robotics:

Artificial Intelligence: is the intelligence of machines and the branch of computer science that aims to create it. AI textbooks define the field as "the study and design of intelligent agents", where an intelligent agent is a system that perceives its environment and takes actions that maximize its chances of success. A program designed to learn from past mistakes.

1. How much do you know about Artificial Intelligence research?
a. Expert

OK, I'm not an expert but I consider myself having more than "some knowledge".

2. If given a choice, would you outlaw advanced A.I. research?
b. No

In Hastur's name - NO! The advanced "advanced A.I. research" has been around since for almost half a century. Give the people some credit, they know what they are doing. They have had the same concerns and debates and have already covered what the other people's concerned are. They have done it more thoroughly and with more investment and decades before.

3. What do you think are the biggest possible upsides of A.I.? Write down a short list.

Understand more about humans and computers at the same time. A.I. is already used a lot and is already a huge help. Intelligent agents aren't new and they are being improved all the time. We have a computer that fifteen years ago beat the top chess player - we can and we do use that capacity for problem solving to improve the lives of everybody in the world.

4. What do you think are the biggest possible downsides of A.I.? Write a short list.

Ethics of true A.I. If, or rather when, we have a conscious entity, how would it be affected by our moral choices and we by its'. Would shutting it down be considered murder? Would experiments on it be like torture? What rights and restrictions would have?

5. Do you think eventually A.I.s will replace or surpass humanity? If you do, will it be within our lifetime?
b. Yes, but not in our lifetime

Research into A.I. has been around for almost half a century but we don't have half a century of progress. True self aware conscious A.I. entity was thought to become reality in the 70's or early 80's but we have yet to get to that point. A.I. research was held back by too many things that don't really concern computing as a whole. Mainly that we still don't know exactly how the human mind operates, which is a real problem for A.I. as well.

The computing power is there, Moor's law made sure of it. Yes, in some senses it's still not enough but we're not getting the most we could from what we already have either. There is still much work to be done on A.I. In many respects the field is still new, so it would need quite a bit of work to get software better than a human in all respects.

6. This statement is false. Is the previous statement true?
c. Error 404: logic not found

Error 500 general question fault. The premises contradict each other. Bad question. See "unstoppable force and immovable object". Answer is "undefined".

7. Where have you learned the most about Artificial Intelligence and advanced robotics?
c. School

Well, also a bit of b., I suppose, I do rad about A.I. But I think it's mostly from University. I haven't taken robotics modules but I have done some concerning A.I. Robotics just isn't my kind of thing - I'd rather play around with software than hardware. although admittedly robots can be fun - I just don't want to do academic work on them.

8. List several tasks you think that A.I. would be able to help you with in the near future (1-10 years from now)

Research for a cure for various diseases. Disaster/crisis prediction and prevention. Model, simulate and interact with various systems to learn more about them - from construction to just some events. A worthy A.I. opponent in games who is neither a cheating bastard nor a complete moron.

9. How many different computers do you use on a daily basis? (This includes cars made in the last 20 years, ATMs, cellphones, video games, and anything electronic)
b. 11-20

I'm not really sure. I certainly hit the 10+ mark. It may be more. It depends on how you define "use", I suppose but 11-20 sounds about right. They may be more that I just forgot to include.

10. Do you think A.I.s would be able to improve any/all of these systems you use daily?
a. Yes

All? No, not all. A lot of them? Yes, I am certain.

11. How old are you?
b. 21-30

I don't have anything to add, I just thought I'd be consistent with the spoiler tags.

12. Male or Female?
a. Male

Consistency.

13. Do you for one, welcome our new robotic overlords?
Yes, master

Yes, I have. I described a certain brand of razor blades as "Great if you like blood" and it was happy with it. I was happy with it too. I've gotten qestions about brands I have never heard of but apparently "I have no idea what that is" is a good enough answer. "What the fuck?" isn't though, or at least it didn't work once.

Thanks for participating, and I am glad it isn't just me, even if it is still ridiculous and kind of a dick thing.

1. How much do you know about Artificial Intelligence research?
b. Some knowledge

2. If given a choice, would you outlaw advanced A.I. research?
I wouldn't outlaw it. I would put strict restrictions on it though. If a program is capable of learning, it should only have access to a memory storage large enough to contain what we want it to know, but not much room for anything else.

b. No

3. What do you think are the biggest possible upsides of A.I.? Write down a short list.
Learning more about the workings of the human mind, which ought to lead to biological enhancement technologies.

Having intelligent workers which can adapt to different situations.

4. What do you think are the biggest possible downsides of A.I.? Write a short list.
Considering Artificially intelligent computers would logically be faster than humans, which means that if they ever decide that working for humans is a bad idea, they'd fuck up our shit before we know what's going on.

Enslaving intelligent things is almost universally considered wrong.

They'd drive humans out of work, meaning extremely high unemployment.

5. Do you think eventually A.I.s will replace or surpass humanity? If you do, will it be within our lifetime?
Obviously this depends on how much effort is put into the further development of artificial intelligence. Considering the current political state, I'd say AI weaponization (pretty much the only reason anything is invented these days) is fairly high on the priority list. I'm not sure how far people would take it though. They might just go for them being capable of remembering orders and adapting those orders to the current situation, but not able to lern beyond those parameters ("bake a cake" > capable of baking a cake in a random kitchen) or they could go all in and make them smarter than humans.
Either way, I think the maximum of what is desired will be reached within our lifetime, so "a", with an emphasis on possibly.

a. Yes, possibly within our lifetime

6. This statement is false. Is the previous statement true?
a. That is a paradox and cannot be answered

I am also unsure as to why this question is here in the first place...

7. Where have you learned the most about Artificial Intelligence and advanced robotics?
b. Technology programs, shows, books.

Mostly looking shit up on the internet.

8. List several tasks you think that A.I. would be able to help you with in the near future (1-10 years from now)
Organization, manual labor, possibly some sort of safety system in vehicles to prevent collisions.

9. How many different computers do you use on a daily basis? (This includes cars made in the last 20 years, ATMs, cellphones, video games, and anything electronic)
a. 0-10

10. Do you think A.I.s would be able to improve any/all of these systems you use daily?
A bit of a silly question, I think. AI's would always improve systems, including the pc/tablet/whatever anyone would be using right now.
a. Yes

11. How old are you?
I'm assuming this is related to the "within your lifetime" thing.

a. 10-20

12. Male or Female?
I honestly have no idea what the relation is. Maybe something about psychological aspects?

a. Male

13. Do you for one, welcome our new robotic overlords?
Hmm... That all depends on our willingness to sacrifice freedom for the greater good. I'd say that humanity needs to get out of the mess it's in right now on its own. However, with life on the globe at stake, I wouldn't object if an AI took control of things, but only if it's a humanitarian AI which knows the importance of a life form, human or otherwise.

a. Yes

1. b, some knowledge
2. b, I would never willingly choose to halt such research
3. extremely rapid advancement in technology
much improved chances of humanity evolving in a positive manner
much improved chances of humanity coming together as a single group
4. insufficient data, but I actually see the greatest danger coming from fanatical humans, not the AIs
5. insufficient data, depends on the nature of, role within society, and advancement rate of AIs. given free reign, they might be able to surpass us within the first few years, if fettered, they never will.
6. a
7. b. those sources, along with hours spent pouring over online articles directly from related institutions.
8. If you mean truly adaptive sentient AI, none at all, we aren't that close to achieving the mark.
9. a. 0-10, at least for daily usage, probably 50+ if you asked for weekly P.S. "anything electronic" includes a lot of devices that are not computers by any reasonable definition.
10. a. yes, at least as part of an integrated system. One AI running all or most electronic devices within a household would be able to boost efficiency by quite a bit while lowering energy costs. A different AI for each device would be a jumbled mess.
11. b. 21-30
12. a. Male
13. a. yes. I doubt such will ever occur, but I do not doubt for one moment that such beings would be more capable of a leadership role than the rest of us put together.

Someone else to talk to!
They'd also be good for researching how sapience emerged in humans and other animals.
They might eventually be fantastic for resolving human disputes, like an utterly impartial version of the UN
Extra processing power goes without saying
You could also send them (virtually or physically) as explorers to other planets instead of us going!

4. What do you think are the biggest possible downsides of A.I.? Write a short list.
That we'd end up killing or constraining or torturing it. A sapient entity would most likely want to explore its surroundings, something we'd think of as 'hacking'. What we considered a closed off secure computer system, an AI might consider a cell or sensory deprivation.
There's a great deal of potential for us to exploit them. I think we'd eventually need some kind of AI-rights law to prevent abuse.
Such an AI might go 'rampant' and escape, and not think to kindly of its former masters (I know that the Frankenstein principle is hardly original, sorry)
That it'd 'kill us with kindness' ie we'd give it voluntary control of nearly everything out of convenience, and we'd stop adapting and solving our own problems. Kind of like in Wall-E lol

5. Do you think eventually A.I.s will replace or surpass humanity? If you do, will it be within our lifetime?
b. Yes, but not in our lifetime (I'd prefer "possibly, but not in our lifetime")

6. This statement is false. Is the previous statement true?
a. That is a paradox and cannot be answered (there are multiple answers)

7. Where have you learned the most about Artificial Intelligence and advanced robotics?
a. Movies/sci-fi
b. Technology programs, shows, books.

8. List several tasks you think that A.I. would be able to help you with in the near future
I don't think we'll have sapient AI in the next 10 years. Computers will probably be able to search and process data much more cleverly, and be able to do things faster, but not in a 'self aware' manner

9. How many different computers do you use on a daily basis? (This includes cars made in the last 20 years, ATMs, cellphones, video games, and anything electronic)
