2 A.M? Its probably me, I lose my key alot and if my housemates don't let me in then I'm sleeping under the bush outside our house. Again.
Please, don't judge the nutter who knocks on your door in the small hours of the morning, he simply needs help.

This happened to me once.
When we lived on a massive hill in the middle of nowhere, as well.
I was freaked out, but I went and had a look through the window (we had a window that let you see the front door) and it turned out just to be my mum's best friend's daughter who'd had a fight with her mum in the middle of the night and took a taxi to our house.

I dunno what I'd do if it happened here, probably pretend not to be in, or try and see who it is. I don't really know anyone round here though so I'd probably call the police if they kept at it.
It happened to me once too, actually. In my case it was a repo man who went to the wrong house. He was apparently trying to repossess a car from my neighbors on the other side of the street. That was a fun night. He woke up the whole family with his pounding, although fortunately he was willing to recognize that his dumb ass had gone to the wrong house. He then proceeded to go do the same thing to the neighbors.

If it happened again, I'd look through the peep hole to see who it was. What I did would depend on whether or not I recognized them and what they were saying. Because as Phasmal's and my experiences illustrate, it can range from someone you want to let in to someone you really ought to call the cops on.

We have windows lining the door.

So I can see out.

From upstairs.

Where they can't see me, unless they're crouching and paranoid.

So I'll see who it is.

If I don't recognize, I'll yell "SHOVE OFF! I'VE ALREADY SAID I DON'T WANT YOUR PORN! YOU'RE NOT EVEN THAT HOT!"

That oughtta mess with them a bit.

If they persist, out come the phone a 911, if only because of disturbing the peace.

In the event that they break the windows and enter, I'll be standing at the top of the stairs, with lots of chuckable objects nearby, with a backup fire extinguisher if they start coming up the stairs.

It's nice to know that so many of you would answer the door to a stranger with a knife...

Turn on the light, see who it is. And if they're some axe wielding murderer.... we'll they first have to get through the door, it's glass, but plenty of time to step into the kitchen and grab knives, or I'll use a chair, so that I can defeat him comically.

Go upstairs, put headphones on with loud music playing. They can knock as hard as they want....I wont hear them.

I do find it a bit weird to see so many so scared, is it really that bad wherever you guys are from?
Speaking honestly? No.

Home invasions in my area are on the rise, but they're far from common place. That's not the reason for my response being as it is.

The reason is that I don't want those I care about or myself to be a victim. It's very easy to assume that because the chances of it happening are low it'll never happen to you... but real life doesn't work that way. I'm sure the people out there who are victims never wanted or expected to be victims, they just weren't careful and didn't take precautions.

Yes, I understand that this outlook on life can perhaps be seen as paranoia. So be it. The way I see it though, when it's easy enough to reduce risk at no tangible cost to anybody, it's negligent not to.
Well I'm not saying you should throw open the door with your eyes closed and bare your chest for whatever blows may come.

But calling the police because someone's knocking on your door at an unusual time as a fair number of posters seem to be suggesting? That's a bit much right? Right?
Nope. In some neighborhoods that's common sense. Or, in my parent's case, Dad was out of town a lot, and we lived in the middle of nowhere. Knocking at 2 AM can really ONLY be a breaking and entering, and needs to be reported first.

Or where I used to live, where I opened the door one night to go 2 blocks to Subway, and had gunshots from the street. (2 gangbangers trying to kill each other next door, but I didn't know that until the papers the next day. 9 shots, no injuries... I weep for people...)

While usually it's just a call for help, police can do that better than you can. And they're trained to do it safer for themselves and others.

I would like to think I would do something witty, possibly involving a very famous Edgar Allen Poe poem. But I'd not be scared of them getting in, two bulky solid doors with deadlocks (always engaged). Honestly, I'd be more curious than scared.

^what I would probably actually do if I couldn't discern an identity.

I would grab either my wrist blade or handgun and conceal it behind me as I carefully crack open the door to see who it is. I wouldn't call the cops right away in case it was just a friend in need of help for whatever reason.
However, if I view them dangerous, or they remain persistant after I tell them off (no reason they should be acting this way at 2 A.M.) then I will call the police... Still remaining vigilant in case things get ugly

I would on some shorts and a Hawaiian shirt then I would unlock the door, run to the end of the corridor and put one hand behind my head, the other on my hip and start doing pelvic thrusts at him. And if that didn't scare him away, hammer time... Like, literally throw a hammer at him...

Put on my Batman outfit and sneak out the back door. Make my way around the house and sneak up behind the knocker. Either wait for them to turn around, at which point I pounce on them and start swinging my fists, or I grab them and start interrogating them in my best Christian Bale Batvoice.

Grab a carving knife from the kitchen, then head to the door and turn on the porch light so I can see who it is. Luckily I've got two front doors (a barred-type screen door and a heavy wood and glass door) So I've got a bit of protection against whoever it is.

Did happened to me many times because living in secntral tokyo you live in an apartment building and more often than not, some drunk person gets off on the wrong floor and tries to get into your room thinking it is their house/ friends house etc.

I usually peer through the peep hole and watch until they give up.
If they are persistant I would call the cops. But either way i would never open the door myself.

Seriously, though, you guys are aware that you sound like psychopaths, right?
So I always have a knife ready to draw if I don't know the guy on the other side of the door, I guess that makes me as crazy as every cop that has ever approached a suspect.

Hope for the best, plan for the worst, you'll live longer.

I'd open the door of course. Come on, what are the chances that it's someone trying to hurt you? That's just paranoid.

...

Okay, fine. I'd open the door with one hand. The other hand would be in my pocket holding a switchblade.

This has actually happened to me a few times. All except one occasion were perfectly innocent circumstances. That one time was a bit dodgy, but nothing happened.

Open the door and demand to know how they bypassed the mine in my front yard.

I'd call the cops and while they're making their way over, try to convince them that God is talking to them, by using a mega phone and a deep, booming voice
